LS1 and LQ9

The LQ9 motor is a 6 liter motor isnt it? What are the differences in the general design between the two. I know you can use the lq9 heads on an ls1. And are all ls1's all aluminum blocks? All the pictures im seeing of these motors makes the metal look like aluminum.

LS1 = Aluminum
LQ9 = Iron

LS1 is on the stand for this pic. LQ9 is on the floor.
The blocks are very similar. The LQ9 has a 4" bore, and the LS1 has a 3.898" bore.

oh.....so you put the LQ9 in your car? cool....I was wondering why people didnt do this....Can you get an LS1 bored to 4" without hitting anything?

...i guess you wouldlve done that if it was possible......

Yeah...the LS1 would need re-sleeved to bore it out that big.

My LQ9 block isn't bored at all. Longer stroke though....making it a 402ci.

so lemme ask you this. Youll probably get 550-600hp with your new motor. Couldnt you easily get that kinda power out of the ls1?

Mr. Luos

With a blower. Or nitrous.

But not just motor? Do you think that the stock forged internals could handle 500 hp? Im back to my LS1 swap idea and im thinking I might be able to find one to rebuild. And if the stock internals will work for me then thats a few less things to buy. With the efficiency of the ls1 I can get a gob of power and then still get decent mileage and good durability with it. And I can get the tubular k member and a arms while im at it. Bigest thing I worried about is the exhaust. I thing id have to get custom work done to fit the ls1 manifolds to bolt up to the stock pipes. Everything else seems to be pretty straight forward as to what has to happen. Whats stock fuel pressure for an LS1 system?

500 RWHP with an all motor LS1 is very tough.
Needs the best heads and biggest cam. Up the compression half a point or so as well. And of course, all the bolt-ons.

If you are looking for a good running daily driver with good power, a very good set of heads and an average sized cam would probably be best. Probably see right around 425 RWHP with decent mileage and a decent daily driver.

.....so the vette ls1 with 405hp is really close to its limit?

Mr. Luos

LS6.

Makes about 350 RWHP. Much better heads than the LS1.

whats the differences in the ls6 and ls1? cubic inches or what?

Mr. Luos

Cam and heads.
Block was a touch stronger as well.

so could u technically upgrade a ls1 to ls6?

you can buy ported ls6 heads and an ls6 intake manifold. And im sure other parts like the cams are swapable.

Mr. Luos

You could.

Although if you did that, you might as well go bigger and better. I couldn't see swapping out an LS1 cam for an LS6 cam. At least not if you are looking for flat out performance.
The only thing would be the block. LS6 block looks the exact same as the LS1 block, but it (for some reason) is a little bit stronger.
