speedometer

Hey my speedometer just started screwing up. 04' silverado 4x4 half ton regular cab. It starts sticking after I drive about 30 min. Then if I slow down and speed up it starts from there. Like if I was going 70 and slow down to 20 it still shows 70, but when I speed back up it acts like 70 is 0 and starts speeding up on the guage accordingly. If I was going 30 it would show 100. And it keeps it up. After it sits for awhile, I can turn the key on and off a few times and it will keep moving towards 0 until it gets there. It will then act normal for short distances until I drive 30 min. or more. The tranny still shifts properly and at the right rpms. Cruise still works fine. It acts like the computer is still getting the proper speed, for the tranny and cruise to still work, and no check engine light. Any ideas??? Please help!!! Thanks!!!

It might be your speedometer cable. I know on my buddies car his cable was sticking and it made a ringing or like a ticking sound though.

IF you have a speedo cable. Most guages are electronic now, and the speedo gets its signal from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), and the cable is eliminated. Seing how it's an 04, you should still be under warranty (Unless you're over the 36,000 mile mark) Have the dealership fix it. Their scanner can read what the signal going to the speedo is, and see if it's the same as it's reading. Could just be a bad VSS, or something in the cluster. Besides that, warranty work is free. Drop it off, pick it up when it's done.

I just fixed the same thing on my 2003 Avalanche with the exact same problem. I would stop and it would be at 60. Then when I would go 40 it would say 100. For a couple days it would be above 130 whether I was sitting still or moving. It seemed like every day, I would get a different reading. What it turned out to be is the needle was loose on the shaft. On the 2003 Avalanche (which is probably the same dash as Silvertado Yukon etc) do the following:
1. parking brake on (step 2 takes car out of park)
2. put gearshift in 1
3. tilt steering wheel all the way down
4. pull trim off dash (there are no screws) it just snaps off
5. take 4 screws off instrument cluster.
6. remove clip that holds wire so that it can extend away from dash
7. I removed the wire and cluster to fix on a bench., but it would be easier if you can unsnap the part that holds on the glass, without removing the wires. The wires come off hard. The glass unsnaps on the side. I think there are white clips
8. Put needle on zero and push on tight. It appears to be a tapered shaft with a friction fit.
9. turn engine on and off a few times. this resets the needle to zero.
10. after doing this a few times, and the needle is at zero, replace the unit. There is a adjusting mechanism inside the needle that lets it adjust, even though it is pushed tight on shaft. If it doesnt zero, just move the needle.
I had different readings every day, but it has worked perfect for 3 days since I did this.

Had my truck at the dealer and they were talking about a (insert more than a handfull) of trucks are in for bad instrument clusters. The VSS is sending the signal properly but hte guts in the cluster are bad. They pull the cluster and send it off for work. After it is either reworked or replaced they reinstall it and give you back your truck. No driving without the origonal cluster....... As told by my service tech friend at the dealership.

That is exactly what my 2003 Yukon started doing, also my husbands '03 Yukon company car. They were both at about 75,000 miles. Did you get yours solved?

Alot of guys have had the same problem. Mine wont move fluidly above 60 and sticks all over the place. From what I have heard its from bad stepper motors. I have used this as an excuse to order a Escalade cluster. Which I still need to do, I havent done it yet, but my Eclipse Nav system tells me how fast im going.
