wheel bearings?

I just took the front wheel off my honda and as i turned the rotor with my hand it had a squealy noise to it. Is that wheel bearings?

If they are squeling when you turn it by hand then they will be making a lot more of the same noise when you are driving.

Its most likely just the brake pad lightly rubbing on the disc, it does that. :)


Worn wheel bearings will show movment in the wheel on the hub long before they start making any noise.
Put the wheel back on, and with the car jacked up and properly surported on axle stands see if there is any movement in the wheel, up and down, and side to side. It will only be small, a fraction of a millimeter, but you will feel it as a slight knock sensation.

I have always experienced bad wheel bearings making a kind of humming/rubbing noise when you are driving. It would make sense that the wheel would have a slight slight bit of movement when jacked up, but if you're paranoid then you'll probably end up thinking the tire moved that much....take it to just brakes or some auto place like that if you're not sure.

well i first heard it when i was going at slow rate of speeds but i dont know at high speeds. Curtis here on the forum told me it is probly an alignment problem but tgat was before i took the wheel off and did this. I also wanted to make sure its not the bearings and go to an alignment shop and they tell me that they cant do it or something.
I also get a vibration like if im going like 60mph and let off the gas going down hill or something. Its really strong vibration on the wheel.

You cant replace the wheels bearings, you have to replace the whole hub.

If its anything made after early 80's.

Assuming its the wheel bearings that need replacing.

Although Honda won't supply individual bearings, its still possible to press the old ones out of the hub, and replace them on some of the hub designs with out to much trouble, but it does require some special tools. Like a strong press.
The bearings are a metric size though, easy to get in most countries over the counter from any number of shops, but could be a challange in imperial america.

Yeah, like moppie said, they are possable to change if you can get them, but in america (part I live anyway) there is no way to get them.

Also like he said, thats assuming thats the problem, I just threw that in so you would be prepaired. It sounds like you may have a combination of problems.

Well the squeel is like a sqeeky door closing, dont know if that helps but thats what it kinda sounds like

You need to take it back to the alignment shop and ask them why they can't give it an alignment.

They will tell you whats worn out, and properly give you a price to fix it.

sorry if i put it wrong, i didnt take it to one, i just didnt want to waste my time or have them charge me for just taking it in and it being something else. So i guess ill start off by taking it in to get one.

If they are an honest shop they will tell you they can't preform the alignment because there is some play in the wheels.
They will then tell you what that play is.


Cars are complex creatures, and you can never garuntee an answer to a technical problem over the internet, to do it properly you have to have enough basic skill to be able to preform some hands on work yourself. Or be prepared to pay someone else to do it.
