95 civic, won't start, no spark, not distributor

I have a 95 Honda Civic Ex... so it has a 1.6L V-tech engine. It died as I was driving down the road the other day and acted like it was out of gas. It turned out that the spark plugs weren't firing... so I had the distributor replaced. This unfortunately did not fix the problem... so there is still no spark. That means it goes deeper than the distributor to possibly some controller. Has anyone seen this before or have any feedback as to the possible cause or severity of this problem? Thanks...

Matthew

I would check the ends of your plug wires, or even check the distributor cap if you didn't get a new one, the rotor inside the distributor could possibly be worn down or not be getting good enough contact with the cap.

I had the entire distributor replaced... cap, rotor, ect... and the wires aren't in bad shape....

you used a known working distributor? where did you get it? i assume you visually checked the plug wire terminals and the wires closely. also confirmed with a resistance check that didnt read over 25k on the plug wires.....................thats why you are for certain it is not the plug wires. also, when you checked for spark you checked it from the plug wires instead of the spark plugs themselves.

if all from the spark plugs to the distributor check out ok, its time to start checking the wiring. start checking the contiutiy and voltage from the icm to the ecu. from the battery to the underhood fusebox to the ignition switch to the underdash fusebox to the icm and coil. you also need to check the grounds to the ecu and to the icm.

also check the dizzy sensor wirings (cyp/ckp/tdc) for contiuity and voltage to the ecu. that pretty much covers the wiring outside the dizzy of the ignition system.

PS: the dizzy sensors (cyp, ckp, tdc) share a ground to the ecu that was mentioned above. this ground is located on the thermostat housing.

Thanks for the post... lots of good information there. It turns out the ECM is bad... and the dealership wants almost a grand to replace it. Ouch! I've started looking for a replacement myself because I figure it can't be that hard to replace... assuming I don't need a computer to reprogram or reboot the system. That's where it's sitting at the moment. Thanks again for the help!

you need a p28 ecu. check ebay and honda-tech.com classifieds.
