okokok... I am loath to admit it, but about a month ago I heard a thing on *cough* NPR *cough* that was all about this british company that devised a license plate that could be tracked by satellite. Implication was that the authorities could locate stolen vehicles easier, be alerted when a vehicle that had expired tags left it's "residence" and all that stuff... BUT theoretically you could also instantaneously get a ticket for speeding, running a light, etc. They were trying to bring it here.

Has anyone heard anything more on this?

Do you think it would work on an older car that had NO comptuers, etc on it?

Think about it... this would eliminate the needs for highway patrols because they would know immediately if you were speeding. At that point I think I would buy some sort of transportation that this fucking thing couldn't be hooked up to.

that system is unconstitutional i think... it violates privacy rights, doesnt it? cause you could always be tracked, the goverment would always know where u were 24/7.....

i wouldnt put it past our government to instate a system like this.. put more people out of work.. thats all they seem to be doing lately isnt it?

*on a side note, it probably would violate privacy rights.. but it wouldnt be hard to get around that.. they would just have to pass some clever named bill in congress..

Amen.

Morley, you've heard this too huh? So the tag is in the PLATE??? or does it run through the car's computer, or whatever for power, etc. From what little technical info I heard it seems like it wouldn't work on a non-computer car.. ie customs or 70's and older cars. If that's the case.... I'm gonna go buy the 55 Chevy pickup and 56 panel body I saw the other day and have them redone so I can avoid those friggin plates.

to be on topic, i would just take a sledge hammer to the part of the plate that has the tracking device... then just put it back on with a non-functional plate, and speed all i want :evillol:

OK, now I'm upset... the chip has it's own powersource??? This is damned ridiculous.

Who'd I vote for some Stalin wanna be liberal???

I can say one thing... If this comes over here, we're gonna hafta get some sort of petition together for our leglislators to try to defeat this shit. Maybe darft one and post it up and people can download it and have people in their districts and then mail it into your congress poeple.

Talk about infringment of rights....

drvngstorm05
10-25-2005, 09:21 AM
it won't pass... i'd bet a huge amount of money on that if i wasn't broke lol... if anything like that comes out, it will be used similar to lojack... it will only be activated in the case of a reported stolen car, or maybe if the car is in the process of running from the cops... they won't monitor you all the time, that is infringment of our rights, and won't pass

I was reading one if the articles... in great britain they're considering fining you if you tamper with the plate.

Someone needs to go back in time and abort the idiot that dreamt up this RFID license plate bullshit.

in our country it is illegal to monitor us all the time, and that won't happen... they would only use it if something NEEDS to be found... now in great britian, they may be SOL

pretty much all new GM vehicles can come with OnStar... but those cars aren't constantly monitored... only if you activate it with the button, or if you report your car stolen, then they locate it for ya...

if they wanted to constantly monitor cars... they already would have been doing it to some... my mom's car has onstar, i never got her in trouble when i drove 130 down the interstate...

well you guys gotta remember that the Freeways and Highways were made and maintained by the government to transport large-military vehicles across country if need be. And if there is a home-front war all freeways and such will be blocked off for military use.. So it is there land you are driving on, not really ours fyi.

So as far as tracking what you do on their property, I dont think its illegal, just sucks. Now if they follow you to your house and go infrared to see what you wack to at night, thats another story.

Here in Illinois, we have the I-Pass to use on the tollways so you just drive throught the tollbooth and get billed for each use. It has been rumored that the state wants to use the elapsed time it takes a pass user to get from one location to another to determine the rate of speed required to make that time. So at the end of the month, you get your bill for two tolls, one on, one off, and oh by the way a ticket because we determined you went this fast to make it in that amount of time.

The technology is here, it's just going to take some legal wonder boy to make it happen and not an infringement.

if they got this thing here, they would still need cops on the road to make sure people arent driving without the sattelite tag :screwy:

About that.. I think that if we actually have guys who have passed highschool or hell even watched the History channel a couple of nights would know that using the freeway and such to transport military vehicles across the country isnt that fast compared to using the railroad, which will be hell of alot quicker and better, I mean look at what happend to Germany with the autobahn.. we used it more than they did so I would think that we would sabotage our freeway system to stop people from coming as quick.

We would still need cops. Speeding tickets are not the only things we deal with. You still have domestic violence, drink drivers(who usually drive to slow for track), murders and other assorted stuff. Unless every traffic light in the country were hooked into this thing, cops would still need to be around for running red lights and other dangerous activity. Trust me, the cops are going nowhere.
