Change the oil to something like a 10w30 - 20w50 if it has wear on it - stay away from 10w40.

That's pretty much it, that and a box of tire chains.

take the car to a dealer, or mechanic you trust and have them, check the coolant, they will be able to tell you, how cold the coolant is protected for. ex. -20 or -30 below. if its been a while flush the system.. new blades help, and a tune up also will help if its been a while. have the defroster checked and the heater.

make sure you clean it often, or the rust will kill it

Undercoat it!! *Get a Rust Evader corrosion contol unit*. Wax the hell out of it.
***And heres one for yah... this works VERY VERY well at keeping the rust away from rotting out crutial parts like brake lines, gas lines, floor pans, nuts bolts, etc. Take thick grease (not food grease), preferably Long Term Grease and get a lot of it. Then get a rubber glove and take the grease and spread it along your floor pans, all over your brake & gas lines (especially where there's clips and areas touching the chassis or axel) and anywhere else under the car that you dont want to rust. Believe me I found this out accidenty when there was some grease on my A-frame and I wiped off the grease and underneith there was absolutely no rust. So I decided to just cover the entire bottom of my car in grease, even the areas that have already begun to rust. Since then the car has seen 2 winters and the rust hasn't gotten any worse.

I've also noticed on other Caprices that rust likes to creep up from behind the chrome trim around the wheel wells. I took off the crome trim, cleaned behind them out and greased the inside of the trim where it wouldnt be seen, but will still prevent my car from rotting. So far so good, 3 winters total and my car is nearly rust free (besides areas of the underbody that had begun to rust before I got the car). As for the body itself, its completely rust free. If possible I'd want your car to remain in its good condition as well. I will be listing a post tonight with a bunch of information on rust removal and prevention. Check it out.
