The ABS light is on steady, can I bypass the ABS system and kill the light and buzzer by removing the 5 related fuses, and/or the ABS relay? My 2004 Impala does not have ABS, and I would prefer not to have it on the malibu also. thanks-

Will the std. brakes still work correctly in an emergency stop without the ABS trying to work and causing a skid? I know the problem is a bad Right front wheel speed sensor.

The brake system will work normally however there will not be any ABS. Also, I disabled the ABS in a Cavilier and the brake pedal became much more firm and responsive. Not sure why.

2001 Malibu ABS light went on

Hi, the ABS light on my 01 Malibu went on twice recently. The first time was during raining, i restarted the engine and it is gone. Today it is cold wether and I parked outside overnight. I drove for about 5km and then ABS light went on. After i arrived office (drove another 1km), i restarted the engine and the light is off.
Anyone can help?

Anyone can help? You really need to have a "scan" done to be sure, but I found my problem by checking continuity with a ohm meter, the R_F wheel sensor was open. I would only worry about it if the light comes back on steady.

I had the same thing happen on my '98 malibu. I ended up having the wheel bearings replaced. Lucky it was still under warranty when it happened.

I am having the same problem. Is this how you found the bad sensor? When you say scan are you talking abour something other than the computers you can use at autozone or are you talking about the maybe a computer at the dealer? Thanks!

I was able to disable the ABS by removing the relays for the ABS system, however if u do this u r not going to be able to turn off the light. Since the ABS is inoperative the system is going to know and thus throw a light.

I unpulgged the plugs at the back side of the wheels and compared meter readings, which showed the right sensor as defective (open connection) The wire harness is also known to fail. A dealer will scan it for you to locate the problem for about $60

I have the same problem with my 98. The ABS light is always on. My mechanic told me a wire was bad in the harness. He said it was about $200 to fix it. I said I will drive it without ABS brakes !!! I'm not going to put that much into a car with 135K for that minor item.

Wsc:

Sounds like your alternator is on it's way out....if it hasn't left yet. Your ABS is failing everytime you have a heavy load (rain, cold and headlights) on the alternator. Mine did the same thing. I ignored my ABS light for months then one day my alternator light came on. Once I replaced my alternator my ABS problem disappeared.
