2006 Civic EX.....still a tuner?

I was looking at the new Civic EX because i think they're a fairly sharp looking car and decently priced as well. Anyway, i was looking at the new EX's and i noticed that the exhaust manifold on the new R18A1 is integrated into the head! IDK if i saw it wrong or what, but if so, how are you going to put a header on it or anything?? The other thing is, is that the engine is sooooo cramped that it'd be hard to do anything w/ it.

I can't wait until the new civic si comes out so i can see how the hell they're going to stuff a K20 into that little compartment!

i dont think that it is built into the head ,i had the oppertunity to test drive one and they arent that bad a little cramped in the back. i didnt like the fact that the exhaust manifold does have the cat attached right to it and also a o2 sensor right on the top of it and another one half way down it. i believe the headers that come out for this will be fairly intresting though well have to wait and see how they turn out

Actually, the 01-05 civic and the RSX, its engine compartment are the same sizes. The RSX have the K20 already on it, and it (the K20) can be 01-05 civic without any problem.

The cat is positioned after the manifold to reduce emissions. This "puts the engine below the ULEV-2/Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions levels in all the 50 states".

well i wasn't talkin about the 01-05's....the new Civics have tiny engine compartments!! But that's beside the point. I was wondering if i saw the car right.....is the exhaust built as part of the head??

You will still be able to get a cat-back exhaust, just no headers. The headers (exhuast manifold) are cast into the head as a single piece. This is acros the board EX,LX,DX. The SI of course is mod friendly with the K20 foudn in the RSX so no probelms there.
But back to the original topic about the 06 being tuner friendly. The SI has and will always be Honda's "Tuner friendly car" The Ex and so forth are not ment to be race cars. They are gas friendly cheap economical cars....Till a kid gets there hands on one and thinks its fast....There should be no arguments about what Honda has done this time around. Buy an SI if you want to play with the big boys. (general statement not directed to anyone).

I'm new to Honda and I'm seriously considering an 06' Civic EX.
It won't be for racing or tuning. It's more of my wife's commuter/ errand
car. HOWEVER I still appreciate decent performance without having to
"upgrade" or "tune" anything! My choice at the moment is between an
Audi A3 2.0T or the Civic EX, with the civic being favored d/t the Audi's
91 Octane fuel requirement and it's $10k more!

Your comparing to totally different cars and classes which is odd.

They are comparable to me because of the features I consider practical.
Most importantly, both vehicles are top safety picks by IIHS.
They are both tidy vehicles with fairly nimble driving characteristics.
Both get good fuel econmy and are comfortable for 2 adults/ 3 kids.
What I'm trying to find out about Honda's here is what people really
have experience with and if the performance envelope REQUIRES "tuning."
I'm trying to discern from your experiences just how much fun the new
generation Civics (8th?) are. Please bear with me!

Gotcha ok well the Civic is made to be safe and practicale in many areas as well as cost efficent. I have owned 2 Civic and they have been great no problems at all that were major or required assistance from the dealer. You would not need to alter the car in any way to get better performance. The car is made to perform at its best from factory. The car is altered more so then other due to its cheap price tag for kids and enthusiests. The civic would be a smart choice as well as the accord if your interested in saving a few bucks as opposed to the Audi. FYI for a better performing civic you might want to check out the SI or even the newer SI 4 door that will be arriving early next year.

the only thing i didn't like about the Civic was the gutless SOHC 1.6L engine that it had. My Civic had all sorts of crap on it too and it was still slower than hell. I have a GSR now and it is night and day faster and the engine is soooo much smoother and nicer. The EX has a cable tranny too....the B series hydraulic trannies are much smoother.

Theres nothing wrong w/ Civics, i've driven the 06 EX and its a great value for the price!
