hi i know there are a few posts with similar problems but i thought i would run through my problem with my 96 taurus stalling.
car starts fine, but i put it in gear (drive/reverse) and it would stall or start driving and stall. i guess when it really warmed up it would stop stalling. i took it to a place explained the situation. Now mind you my "check engine" light has been on for awhile and no problems in running or anything before this, and this place tells me its the "cam sensor" and recommend a tune up, and being it has original ignition wires to replace those. so not knowing alot about car mechanics and really not being impressed with the price they told me said fine and do it. I get the car, drive it home, pull in the driveway and it stalls out. later on that same day go to go out put it in reverse, go to back up, stalls. after a min of waiting restart put it in drive and stalls. does this a few times and say screw it. next day go to bring it back, does same thing. finally after 8-10 stalls it doesnt stall and i am able to get back to the mechanics. leave it there for the day call them up and they say they "think" it might be i believe they said "ai sensor or motor" they weren't sure but were willing to install it for free but charge me for the part other wise to leave the car there to keep testing it by warming it up and letting it cool. At this point i am thinking something isn't right. next day comes they are still clueless, but say its running fine and it hasn't stalled out. so now i have it back and thank god (first day only back) it hasnt stalled, yet.
i guess i am trying to figure out if they diagnosed it wrong and i payed for something that really had no effect on what my problem was from the start and only did the cam sensor because of the "check engine " light. or what they did was correct in figuring out what the problem was. any help would be greatly appreciated.. thanks in advance (hope that all makes sense)
