The alternator on my 2000 Jetta VR6 just quit on me, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to take it out. Is it going to be easier to get it out from the top or the bottom, and how much am I going to have to get out in the process? Any input?

have you even looked at it?
Pretty sure you will have to remove the thing from the top and although I am not framiliar with the VR6 I am pretty sure you don't have to remove a thing to get to it.
With the proper tools you should be able to get it out in about a half hour. You can get one for cheap at ecstuning.com i think.
Good luck,
