Can Anyone Out There Tell Me How To Remove The Timing Belt Tensioner From A 89 Escort 4dr? I Have Removed The Motor Mount Like The Haynes Manual Says. Got The Right Side Bolt Off. Cannot Figure Out How To Remove The Other Bolt. The Motor Mount Coming Off Of The Engine Seems To Be In The Way. Do I Need A Special Tool?

Not sure but on my car I think it came off with the water pump. It was all one unit.

Well Its A Shame Mine Is Not Like That. I Looked Yesterday. Its Two Seperate Units. You Have To Take The Timing Belt Tensioner Off Before You Can Access The Water Pump. I Will Keep Trying

Yeah, there is a special tool. See here

I was able to make one by grinding, bending and welding some old scrap metal to a cheap 10mm box end until I got the right shape. Looks ghetto but did the job (althought still only able to turn a fracture of a turn at a time.)

Maybe you can borrow or rent one.

Good luck!

I was fighting mine for about twenty minutes, and a friend comes by and whipped out his flexible 1/4" drive flexible extension and ratchet, and it came off in like three minutes.
