5 spd vs Auto
Xx ReasoN xX

OMG i seriously started this thread like last year and people are still arguing about this. OK i was the first to say that 5spd is better and of course i have a 5spd. In the past whatever months i have looked a lot into this subject and have come to this conclusion.....hopefully this will end all this madness.
automatic is better when your pushing like 400hp to the ground
for low amounts of hp 5 spd is better
but there are exceptions:
2006 Corvette Z06 has 505 to the flywheel and only comes in 6 spd manual transmissions (ohh and by the way that car acctually has 530something but they put 505 for some reason)
in another case there was a generation of Trans ams where the auto and the manuals ran the exact same time in the 1/4 mile.
hopefully this thread will finally be able to sleep

AUTO
Why?
cause thats what I got.
took the car over from my parents, it's my runabout, i get tired of shifting at every fucking light. my truck is a 5-spd. fun, but I don't like city driving that much, having to shift all the time, plus I never have to take my hand off my fiancee to shift.
thats my :2cents:

Considering the poop facture of this thread rearing its ugly head all over again Ill take who gives a rats ass for $1000 alex.
A car is a car. Frankly unless you have some kind of a jet engine tac welded to your trunk or even just something to make my wang twitch a little no one cares if its a 5spd auto or you flintstones your ass down the road with your feet. Its a car get over it and let this thing die.
I call for a lock...anyone else in on that?

Power and everything else aside...
The main advantage of owning a 5-speed...
Jump starts, rolling starts, push offs, whatever you want to call it, just can't be done in an auto. Being stuck with a perfectly fine running car and just not being able to start it to get it somewhere to fix it, really blows, I will not buy another auto...

Shit you are going to make me remember. It's a B&M but of course they don't make them for cavalier's but there is one that works with cavalier's. Works great, just throws my tracking off. It was like $40 and took 30 secs to install. it take the pressure of the tranny fluid and increases it. There is off which is normal driving and then stage one which is faster shifting and the stage 2 which shifts hard and fast, chirps the tires on my car a WOT.

You forgot that you can higher the selection stage with no problems while the car is running but in order to lower the selection setting the car must be turned off and then back on for it to take effect.
I drive 24/7 on stage 1 but when I feel like messing around late at night on stage 2 my method is to switch it back to stage 1 pop it in nutral turn the car off and the back on. Takes a few seconds at most and you are back in action in no time.
Stage 2 is just too damn rough for every day stop and go driving.

Just wondering, is it any harder on the transmission to have it higher staged? Like you said stage 2 is rougher than 1, I know it will push out better performance but is it harder on the tranny? Thnx

Yea i forgot about turning it off. They say it is actually better for your tranny to shift faster. I've had my shift kit of MANY miles and my tranny has close to 190,000 miles on it and i've never touched it. Not even the fluid. I use the stage 2 when times are right... like the little fucked up honda this morning

Stage 2 is only really for the track and when you are trying to prove a point on the street. Stage 2 really needs a higher rpm shift to work well. Any low rpm shifting is way too rough on the tranny. Think of it as the same feeling of trying to shift into second gear in a manual at like 3rpm. Its just rough.

What's the difference between the B&m Auto shift kit for $45 and the Autotrans interceptor for $145...aside from the price. Can you install both?
Cavalier2000
05-26-2006, 04:03 PM
yea the autotrans is a connect right to the plug and you cannot adjust it from inside the car, were the b&m you can. The autotrans just plug and play and the b&m you have to wire in. Two wire set-up. It's really easy

well I have drove many cars that are auto and 5spd. Same cars. I can say that I would go with a stick anyday. Never will I waste my time with auto. The five speeds have rev limiters but you can push it to limit everytime always. Auto thats not always the case get the retart shift at like 5 grand. Yeah but I have a buddy who works for a shop and races a olds cutlass surpreme not street legal and he swears by a auto shifting faster and being better. Depends on who you are.
Lances133
10-05-2006, 01:19 AM
.....can't you get as many revs in an auto if you manually shift it? :screwy: And from what I understand, if you get polyurethane motor mounts and the B&M Shift plus for autos, you're just as good as a well experienced person with a standard if not better.
my99cavy

A computer will always be able to shift faster than a human end of story. For 1/4 mile AT will own anyday even the funny cars and things like that use AT but for autoX MT would be better because you can control your own shifts going around turns and what not.
Classicrocjunkie

Autos are better on boost. ;-)... with the B&M shift plus, in a race the auto will also put the manual to shame mod 4 mod with a good driver. Seen it happen over and over again.
