96 Tahoe, Linkage or Sensor Issue?

Hi all. I have a 1996 Tahoe and I just had the parking rod replaced in the tranny (it was bent and not allowing me to shift out of park). The question I have is when I got it back, the indicator light on the dash is off by one position to the right. The transmission shifts right, and the shifter finds all of the gears right, but on the dash it tells me that I am in Reverse when I'm in Park. This means to start the truck, I have to shift to Neutral for it to start, because when I'm in Park, the truck thinks I'm in Reverse. The dealership told me that its a sensor mounted on the tranny, any ideas? Is it something I can fix?

Who did your trans repair?
Sounds like the P/N switch is misadjusted

The local Chevrolet dealer did it. We didn't realize the problem until I went to take the truck home, and by then it was Friday at 6pm and had to have the truck. They said they will fix it but they want it for another full day. I was hoping it was something I could adjust myself. If not, I can take it back but its tough with work and all. Thanks for your time and any help.

Chock the wheels from and back and apply the park brake.
Place the trans in neutral.
Loosen the 2 13mm bolts holding the P/N switch assembly (on the left side of the trans at the shift linkage) and move until the shift indicator displays Neutral

OK, did what you said and was able to adjust the sensor, but it wouldn't adjust far enough. I could get it between gears on the indicator, but it seems like it needs to go a little further. Is it possible that the sensor is bad and just needs replaced? The linkage seems ok everywhere else. Any ideas are appreciated!
