Check Engine

This is driving me nuts! Once in a while, out of the blue, my check engine light would come on. I would pop the hood and see that there's nothing visually wrong. I brought my car to a mech tech, and he said I needed a new ECU. My dad on the other hand, duplicated my keys without my consent and tried to see what was wrong himself. He found that after disconnecting the battery to the car for a while and then reconnecting it, the light would go away, for about a couple weeks, but then it comes on again and the proccess would start all over.
My question is: Does disconnecting the battery merely reset some things in my car? Could the light only come on because something's loose or retarded? Should I just ignore it since it doesn't even come on right away after reconnecting my car to the battery?
Thanks in advance!

It could be any number of things. My old spyder threw CEL almost exactly 50 miles after I put my high flow cat in.... i'd do the battery trick and it would clear it for 50 miles.... all it was was the 2nd O2 sensor....
You need to find out what the CEL code is for us to help you anymore...
