The new 2006 Civic's have a 140 hp engine that has a 10.5:1 compression ratio. Is it possible to run this engine on regular unleaded (87 octane) or will it need to run on supreme to keep it from pinging?

87 recommended as usual.

Thanks, BrodyP. I guess my real question is how can an engine with 10.5:1 compression run on 87 octane without pinging? The Corolla XRS is 11:1 and it has to run on Supreme. Does Honda have to program the computer to compensate for it? And if so, how much more power would be gained if the computer were programmed for Supreme?

If the computer is programmed for regular (87 octane) it will work with this minimum. If you use Supreme the computer is capable to adjust the air/fuel ratio for this octane rating, but this can have another consequences...

dude, my dad tells me that no car with a compression ratio over 10 should be run anything but premium.
