This is how a 100 foot tidal wave could rip accross an entire continent

I would like for people in the know to help me in developing this theory.
The Earth's magnetic poles can concidered as two pollarities, + and -. I believe that the Earth is held in it's possition from an outside magnetic force, perhaps from the sun.
I'm sure you have all done this little trick when you were kids. Take a magnet, place it on the table. Bring out an other magnet and place it beside the first. If you take the second magnet and flip it around, the first one will do the same. This is the basis of my theory.
What would happen if whatever magnetic force that holds the Earth in it's possition were to be reversed? The rock that made up the planet would spin around 180 degrees, while the water would, for the most part stay in place. This would form a tidal wave that would measure more than 100 feet high and wash over the land with devestating force.
Could it be possible that this has already happened in history? Is it likely that this could have caused the mass extinction of dinosaurs, with survivors like alligators and sharks feeding off the large number of carcasses?
Any input into this idea is appreciated. :2cents:
Like this one? Then check out :
- How life passes from planet to planet in a solar system
- Immortality within our reach
- Evolution and viruses
- Music to save all of humanity
Next one to come : Does DNA predetermine manurisms?

Well the poles have switched before.
The dinosaurs were killed by a meteorite, i think in the yucatan.
There have been tsunamis over 100 feet in the past

i read about the poles switching once. Doesnt it happen over a long period? Then maybe we would all be floating in space before any tidal wave could come.

Here's an article about the poles. Basically it's already losing power, and might switch at the end of this millenium, exposing us to cosmic radiation. Yippee!

yep it is in the process of switching right now. arent you glad you live in ther 21st century. yes a meteor killed the dinosaurs, and there have been many tidal waves 100+ feet in history. it would be devastating but wouldnt wipe out all land.
and earth is held in place by gravity not magnetism. the magnetism is because of earths swwirling molten iron core.

when the 6 miles long meteorite hit 65 million yrs ago, the waves were MUCH MUCH bigger than 100 feet
Like thousands or miles.
That thing was moving at miles a second, and the waves still didnt sweep across a continent.
The waves from the Krakatoa volcano explosion were over 120 feet high. But i think the more impressive thing is that the noise from the blast was heard in Australia, thousands of miles away.

there was a landslide in some bay in alaska and the resultion wave was 450 feet high. but it was isolated to the bay thankfully. there were two boats in the bay one was destroyed and the other survived completeley intact. it was weird.

I understand how magnetism is produced in the Earth. My point is that there must be another magnetic force keeping our planet's spining axel "verticle". The Earth shifts slightly every year. (notice how the suns path in the sky stays more south in winter, and comes almost straight above us in the summer) Wouldn't it make sense that if there was no outside acting magnetic force, that we would continue to rotate in one direction, not go back and forth?

We go back and forth because of the Earth's precession. The Earth isn't a perfect circle, it's sort of lop-sided.
Put a bicycle wheel flat, with the middle of the spokes balanced on your finger. Now, spin it. You should notice that it wobbles. The Earth is the same way, the outside force of gravity is acting on it. Magnetism doesn't affect any of that.
Who knew Astronomy class would actually come in handy?

Just my 2 cents.

No it wouldn't. Newton's second law tells us why the earthcontinues to rotate on its axis.

Besides all this bickering does anyone else think that there might be a magnetism that effects, say, our entire solar system that could some day switch pollarities and cause all the planets to flip 180 degrees? Does anyone know of magnetic experiments done in space?

You know, just because YOU don't think something like this could happen doesn't mean that it's not possible. However unlikely. Reality doesn't bend to your beliefs, nor mine. It acts as it does on it's own terms. Just because we've never experienced anything like this does not predetermine the possibilities. I'm just using my imagination to broaden my narrowness of mind.

a theory can never be proved wrong.
I disagree. It was once theororized that the heart was the center of the nervous system. We've pretty much dispelled that one, haven't we? What about the geocentric theory? I dare say that one is also disproven. You have it backwards: theories can in fact be proven wrong, they CANNOT, however, be proven right. Enough data is built up in support of a theory until it is accepted as true. I'm not trying to be harsh, and I appreciate the effort put into the theories, but I just wish they were a little better thought out so as not to be disproven by high-school or below level knowledge.

The facts and/or scientific laws that support my posts are (or at least should be) common knowledge, therefore I do not feel the need to research, cite, and re-validate every single one.
Also, since you are the one proposing the theory, the burden of proof lies on you. You are the one that has to cite facts to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that your new idea is true.

This forum should be a place for both knowledge and entertainment. If you expect every post to be an indisputable leading scientific breakthrough, then maybe your looking in the wrong place. I enjoy a few wacky theories and also the people poking holes in those ideas. If nothing else it's worth a laugh. This is AF off topic, not some scientific journal.

and earth is held in place by gravity not magnetism. the magnetism is because of earths swwirling molten iron core.
Actually the core spins because of the magnetosphere, not the other way around.

The Earth not only rotates on a 23 1/2 degree axis but it also wobbles in that axis which is called precession. The Earth goes through one complete precession cycle in a period of approximately 25,800 years, during which the positions of stars as measured in the equatorial coordinate system will slowly change; the change is actually due to the change of the coordinates. The explanation of this is: The axis of the Earth undergoes precession due to a combination of the Earth's non-spherical shape (it is an oblate spheroid, bulging outward at the equator) and the gravitational tidal forces of the Moon and Sun applying torque as they attempt to pull the equatorial bulge into the plane of the ecliptic.
The Earths magnetic poles have changed before and they will again. However, they change very slowly, and non-violently.
Your question seemed almost silly to me when I first read it. I just don't understand how you can be questioning that. I would have to agree with ec437 and Yogs.

Thank you all for your intellectual feed back. I don't hold any grudges against anyone who critisizes my ideas. I accually rely on everyone's contradictions to reform my theories. The original purpose of these threads is just to increase my infinately growing thurst for understanding of the universe around me.
The only idea that I'm trying to promote is that if a huge magnetic force were to reach through space and come in contact with the Earth, that so long as the same pollarities matched up, the Earth would flip 180 degrees. This would cause the oceans to rapidly sweep over the land and cause chaos.

you dont have to know wich precise angle the earths axis is at, but cmon.. you should know that its not vertical unless you are in elementary school
but all this talk about theory, its not actually a theory but more of a hypothesis.. a theory is a hypothesis that has been proven to be true over a long period of time... and then after remaining to be true for an even longer time, it becomes a law...

I really doubt the idea u r trying to promote. The magnatism produced by teh molten iron core creates an invisible cover around the Earth and that is the reason why we do not get hammered by the cosmic rays and high intensity gamma rays from the Sun.

Inatalon, although most of your theories don't hold much logical ground, I enjoy reading them. I think its great that you have such an open mind and that you can come up with these certain scenarios. With a science degree behind you, i've no doubt that you would turn out some interesting material. Keep it up.
