Progress Thread: 1993 Corvette LT1

I started this 1993 Corvette while I was waiting for the puddy to dry on my Camaro.

The LT1. I only painted the block black where youll see it after I put the heads, oil pan, etc on.

The flat black parts: Fuel Rail Covers, Valve covers, Intake box/snorkle, and hoses. Still a little wet there :)

This is the LT1 intake, its chromed here, what do you recommend I do? Should I paint it aluminium? If I should, will brake fluid strip the chrome? If not, dont worry about it :)

This is the kit. Very nice kit, but alot of molding lines and flakes. Nice detail tho.

I would paint the intake aluminum... bleach works well for stripping chromed parts.

I use 91 percent alcohol to stip my chrome

I would paint them aluminium too, and I use foaming oven cleaner which works really well.

Aluminium it is! Will DOT3 work to strip it? Or should I just use one of the above suggestions?

I would also use the foaming oven cleaner. I have had very good luck with the Eazy-Off brand.

yeah definately aluminum, are you goin for a replica of the real car as far as colors go...or just a cool lookin personal interpretation of the corvette?

I origionally bought the car to recreate my dads vette, but I was tricked (ebay) it turned out to be a convertible instead of a coupe and an automatic instead of a 6 speed. So I plan on building this correctly, as in factory colors.

My current paint plan: Tan Interior with Dark Metallic Green paint.

I havn't looked at my C5 in quite some time..but that is a manual trans no? does it have the wrong shifter?

On my C4, if you look at the shifter, its not wide enough (for lack of a better work) to be a manual. And to the right, is the place for the "P R N OD D 2 1". There is also no clutch pedal on the floor

I tried my best to shoot the picture so you could see the color, but thats the best I could do. Its about the same color as my dads (see ref pic above) and you can also see the tan interior.

Looks good so far. i love that colour on the c4 looks very good. keep up with the good work and keep the pics coming

Do LOTS of test fitting on the finished engine-chassis-body stuff. I built this kit a while back, and I had to yank the pulleys off because the hood would not close. It's a very disappointing kit. It's in a box somewhere, hiding its perfect paint job in shame.

On the pics, two suggestions:

1) Pull the camera away from the part and zoom in, if possible. Then crop to the part. This way the camera can focus on the details and won't be fuzzy. Most people think you have to be close to catch the details - this only works if you have a macro lens.

2. Don't use flash, esp when trying to capture color. I've had a lot of luck with a plain white background and those nifty GE "Reveal" lightbulbs - they're tinted to avoid yellow light. However, the best light for capturing color is natural, indirect sunlight.

Thanks for the comments, and I will do alot of test fitting, thanks for the heads up. I didn't see your suggestions til after I took the recent pictures, so next batch I will do what you suggested.

Painted under the hood and the engine bay black, as well as the A Pillars. I also painted the convertible top tan, from viewing pictures of dark metallic green corvette convertibles, I've seen about 99% with tan tops.

For the side markers, which are clear on the real car, should I use silver paint? Or what do you guys use.

Silver paint should do the trick, or I've heard of some people using bare metal foil to get that reflector look

The 1993 Corvette is basicly done, with the only thing left being the front turn signals. The kit went together fairly smoothly, only beef I had with it being that the turn signals are smoked (wtf?). I didn't have a problem with the pulleys hitting the hood, but I do have a problem with the upper wheel well hitting the sides, preventing the hood from closing. I fixed most of it by trimming the wheel well (it was a seperate piece), so we shall see what happens.

Looks like yours fit a lot better than mine did!
