1993 windshield wiper trouble

My wipers sometimes are hesitant in turning on and sometimes stop in place. I suspect the wiper motor ( had similar issue with my 92 mercury marquis and new motor was fix). Any opinions or suggestions?

I have a 95 that does the same thing, but only when it is hot out. When you shut the wiper off it will stop wherever it is. And if you have it on intermittent wipe, it will do the same, just stop all of a sudden. When it is cool out I don't have the problem.

More than likely you need to replace the motor assembly. Could also be that the circuit breaker is tripping. It's auto reset so it would only stop the wipers for a few seconds. If that were the problem then you need to find out why there is an excessive load on the wipers. Maybe a bad bushing on the linkeage?

I had the same problem on my '93 escort. I was lucky, it was a dirty connection. I claened all connections and the thing started to work again. It may not work for you but it's worth a try.

FOUND THE TROUBLE. I removed the wiper control unit that is between the column switch and the wiper motor (under the dashboard). Carefully opened it up and found a cold solder joint on one of the relays. Touched it up with some fresh solder and all is well.

Good job Oldescort! I don't think I would have found that one. I'd probably have a wire running straight to the battery! :bigthumb:

Sorry about late response. I have not been on the site for some time. I found the unit (small black plastic box) by following the wires from the wiper switch on the steering column. You will need a flashlight (space restriction plus you won't burn your head like I have with a trouble light) and crawl on your back. The unit is mounted on a metal bracket with other black unit(s). I believe it was the one closest to the firewall. You might want to remove the cabling connector from the unit before removing the unit from the bracket. Then be CAREFUL as you take the unit apart. The relay lugs are the larger connections that are soldered. If you look closely you would see a hairline crack around the joint. Just touch it up with a little fresh solder and do not over heat. This all sounds like a lot but once you see how things are arranged it isn't too bad. Have at it!
