overheating question

My 89 jeep Cherokee with the 4.0L I-6 recently ruptured the coolant tank, well, it was replaced but now if I drive it down the block, the coolant temp light comes on. Now, at this point I can put my hand on the block and it is not even warm yet, but the dummy light claims it is overheating. Do I just need to "burp" the block or what? I am not losing coolant, there is none in the oil, so it is not the head gasket.
Any ideas?

Definately burp the system. When I changed out my burst bottle, it took a few days to finally purge out the air.

When the engine is hot, can you feel the upper radiator hose? Is it hot as well (be careful in case it is).

Dale is right, definitely burp the system.

My 87 did the same thing after replacing the thermostat, and both my 89 and 90 did it after replaceing the burst cololant bottle.

Burped all three, no more problems.

Burped it, worked fine for about a day, now on to other problems (see my other thread)
