Fatigued Lateral Arms

How common is it for the lateral arms (I assume the bars that are parallel with the rear spring are called) to fatigue and/or corrode to the point of failure?
The reason I got my car for $800 Cdn was those bars were rotted off of the drivers side. It is now repaired and aligned and works well.

Mechanics charge between $65 and $95/hr depending on the quality and knowledge of their work. I don't know if that is much better then there.
Let me know.
