'95 BMW 525i Key Problem ???

My wife's BMW has a problem starting when it is damp and/or cold. It appears to be related to whatever interlock technology is used with the key. When you turn key, all of the courtesy lights and system checks start but the engine won't crank. When this is happening, it doesn't matter which key we are using, the car won't turn over. Sometimes, it will start after 5 or 10 minutes. One recent time, we had to wait until the next morning for it to start. Any ideas?

The EWS system is pretty foolproof. You need to check the basics first before jumping to a potentially expensive solution. Is there power to the starter motor when you crank? If std trans, is the floor mat bunched up and not allowing the clutch pedal to go down fully and contact the safety switch? If auto, have you tried pushing the shifter as far forward as possible while cranking or tried to start in nuetral? A key problem is usually indicated by an intermittant "spins free" of the ignition lock cylinder. At any rate if it's an EWS (anti drive away/anti theft) problem you'll need to find a good shop with factory or equivalent diagnostic equipment to diagnose it for you. Good Luck.
