sub's work speakers do not? eh?

Okay, so my speakers and my head deck worked great, then today i put my system back in my car, i ran the power w/ fuse to the battery, then the REM to the fuse box, and ran my ground, then all was left was to plug in the rca's. I plugged in the rca's and then started my car and drove around, system worked great, then i made a turn and all the sudden my speakers cut out and the only thing that was making any noise was my subs. I checked all the fuses and they are all fine, im curious on how to fix this!

Speakers are powered by the headunit right?


It sounds like something shifted and shorted out one of the speaker outputs. The headunit's amp then either fried or shut down to keep from frying. Do you have a multimeter?

yes, its a bad output chip on the back of your head. Usually they fry because they get very hot, most of the time from wrong impedences from speakers, or a speaker wire hit ground like stated by sr20. What type of head unit is it? This may sound wierd, but if you pull it out again, there will be a big heatsinc, usually towards the rear of the unit, or the side sometimes, and this is the heatsinc for the output ic chip. When they overheat, they smoke, and you can totally tell the smell, burnt electronics, take a whiff. If you have an expensive deck, it will have a circuit protection device to cut audio to all speakers if the impedence drops. But if its a cheap sony, you may as well buy a new alpine or something. Maybe just unhook power to it to reset things, sometimes this works. And make sure its not just muted.

multi meter? it is an expensive deck, and has a huge heat sink, its pretty dark right now, so i guess in the morning ill get back to it, but i mean it still playes the subs and functions, it jsut doesnt send any power to the speakers
