My engine has a whole assortment of problems, namely a blown haed gasket and still mysterious disappearance of oil, also a busted clutch fan.
So I see this as a prime opportunity to get electric fans since I want them for a rebuild anyway.
Soo what brand works the best and is easiest to install? I'm sure there are other thread on this subject but I need details and am otherwise too lazy to search. I finding flex-a-lite to be the most recommended but I thought I would see if anyone here has one. How is the temperature relay hooked up? Idealy I want a unit that has it's own control and can be wired to the computer. Otherwise I may have to drill and tap a sensor into the water neck, which I'd rather not do. I need one soon cuz my fan will not disengage and that puts me around 5 mpg under normal driving.

The fans for a 28" radiator is the fans from an LS1 Camaro or Trans Am. 2 12" fans in the shroud usually $100+ from a local junkyard work best.
The best non-PCM controller is the Delta Current Control. Flex-A-Lite controllers have problems failing if you do searches on other site you will find this true....

My rad. is 34"....if that helps. I asked the mech. about fans from an LS1 engine and he said they likely would not or would be hard to hook up to my engine.

get some '05 fans from a silverado... I dunno how well it's gonna work on a 97, tho

If you go '05 you gotta make sure you have 34" inside the tanks and 18 1/2" +/- in the vertical......

I've got flex-a-lite fans on my 4.8L (2 13"). They work great!.....now.
Flex-a-lite had a problem with the fuse holder melting. Before they sent out this recall, however, I had already fixed the problem. Besides that, they work great. The relay is a snap to wire if you have any automotive experience whatsoever. The temperature is regulated by a probe that slides in between the fins in the radiator. All you have to do is adjust the relay to keep the coolant at a certain temp. Took me awhile to install the fans though, the mounting brackets they send are useless; had to make my own.

Yeh i had heard about stickin a sensor in the rad fins. That wouldn't be the greatest cuz my rad is often in contact with mud and water and often has mud packed in the fins. And I don't have any acess to metal fab. tools so I want a kit thats complete and will work good as is.

If you have a local shop that can change the PCM with HPTune or LS1Edit you can buy a Nelon Harness and the sensors in your block and the A/C controls will turn your fans on. Very reliable, kept my old truck at the set temp of 185* 100% of the time!

Hmm....so if i can get ahold of fans from an 05 6.0L they should fit since I have a 34" rad and then if i get a wiring harness from Nelson, the fans will be run by the PCM, right?
Next question, best/cheapest place to get those fans?

well, allen, or someone, would have to activate the e-fan setup in your PCM
