catalytic converter replacement

need advice on replacing the cat on my 96. has california emission but purchased new here in nh. my problem is that most local repair shops are confused if the 49 state version will fit or do i have to buy the cal. from the dealer . thanks in advance for any help.

follow up on cat problem .car is all fixed answered my own question . only one cat fits all . fixed it myself. replaced the cat /pipe assy. w/ davico brand direct fit . total cost 265.oo.
much research found out that 1996 thru 1998 rav 4s have a weakspot in the exhaust system at the rear cat. the cat / pipe assy. cracks and breaks w/o warning. note : purchased vehicle new. first repair in 120k 9+ years. no complaints here, awesome car!!!!
