Finished: 1970 Chevelle SS

I just finished this up the other night. It's the AMT 1970 Chevelle 454 SS kit from several years ago. The kit was not too bad but it did have some typical problems, poorly molded parts, lacking detail, etc...

One of the worst areas was the drip rail over the side windows. It was so poorly molded that there would have been no way to BMF it. So I sanded it off and began to replace it with thin plastic rod. Once I started doing that I thought a vinyl top would look cool so I just continued the plastic rod all the way around the base of what would later become the vinyl top. The top was painted with Rustoleum brand textured black paint and the chrome trim outlined with Bare Metal Foil.

I chose not to add the stripes to this car. The color is Testors Black Cherry Pearl lacquer with Tamiya TS-13 clear and polished. The wheels are the kit wheels but the tires were replaced with tires from the parts box. I wanted the back ones to be larger that the front for a more muscular look but not a jacked up rearend look. I also replaced the exhaust tips with some extra parts lying around.

Although the engine is there it's so poorly detailed under the hood it's not really worth showing.

Anyway, thanks for looking....

Nice Bui;d. i've always liked the AMT 70 Chevelle over the Revell. I just think the proportions on the body are better, although the Revell kit has better detailing.

Overall a very clean build, as always when it comes from you! Great stance, did you do anything to the suspension, lowering the front?

Wow, you take what I consider a fairly boring car and make it absolutely delightful

Makes me think about scrounging up my Revell snap kit and building it, it's a good kit and sometimes I need to see a model like yours to get inspired again.

Thanks to everyone for the great compliments...
Kind words from other forum members help us all stay motivated.

cooltc2004, I'll get an engine pic posted on here soon. It's nothing special though. It didn't have much under hood detail and all I did extra was add some spark plug wires. Pics coming soon....

Looks great! That paint color is magnificent and I like the kinda subtlety it retains by keeping stock rims.

Awesome car!
The color, and stance are great.

You taught a lot of us at ACME some very useful tips with this build. BMF, adding new body molding, BMF before paint on the cowl text, a great paint for vinyl roofs.

Thanks for sharing with all of us. I've already used some of the things on my builds I've learned watching you build this. :bigthumb:
