Lookin for a good muffler...

I have a custom exhaust with a muffler from the shop it was done at. My problem is that it sounds rasply when im get on the engine especially around 3000rpm. :disappoin I went to the Magnaflow website and listened to a sound bite they had of the muffler on a 1.5civic. Heard good things about them and dynomax mufflers as far as sound and without loss of hp. If some one could give me some links to some muffler sound bites with names so i can heard which is more towards to tone im lookin for. Even if you do a short home movie with sound for your own muffler and the name of what u r using i would appreciate it ALOT. tanx guys

I had a magnaflow on my 1.5 & found it was just too loud for my tastes. Had a nice deep exhaust note, but on the highway I kept turning the stereo up to drown it out & people kept thinking I had exhaust problems. Plus I wasn't accelerating as much as I felt like at lights because being a 1.5 it didn't have the speed to match the sound (IMO) & I didn't want to be shamed out.
I changed to a Dynomax & found it much quieter, yet still free flowing & not raspy. They make a muffler that fits in the same place as stock & has two out pipes, so it looks like an SI exhaust, but with bigger pipes. Much happier now.

I want to ditch my fart can (which sounds okay with the resonator and mods I have on my sohc 1.6). I'm thinking Dynomax... They have them at Advance Auto for $40. Hell, I may even go with the shop's Flowmaster 30 series if it's at least aluminized. It's kind of hard to justify giving up a stainless muffler that cost over $100 for something less than half the cost...

Having no cat makes your car sound like shit. I've had at least 5 different exuast setup. Stock, axle back, canister with no resonator, then no resonator or cat, and then I went back to a "stock" setup.
I like to have bigger piping, but stock looking the best. I can finally hear my engine again. I don't get unwanted attention from every ricer to drive by me, and I don't piss off my neighbours anymore. And like turtle said, if I fuck up a muffler, it only costs me like $50 to replace. :)

it only sounds rasply when im alittle over the position the peddle should be for a good mixture as the engine rpms are climbing and thats from 3000 -3500. besides that little rasp im completely happy with my setup, sounds good tone and volume wise, not loud and attention grabbing except when i hit that rasp which can be avoided if im not driving like a crazed lunatic. SiZ... how do YOU fuck up your muffler? ive had 3 on mine since ive had the car(5-6yrs) the one that came with it rusted at the inlet so i replaced with a 3" APEXi canister with 2.5" piping but running over the driverside rear wheel rather then the passengerside. Then changed that to 2.25" and running on the stock side and crossed over like the stock muffler did, but stopped half way and angled the canister on a 45deg. out the stock muffler tip outlet on the bumper. Then went to a stock looking 2.25" muffler with dual tips out like the SI, all those setups had a cat. Now its 2.5" all around with the gutted cat, by the way it sounded almost the same both with a cat and with a gutted cat, its a shitty "turboflow" muffler that gave me the same rasp problem even when it was a 2.25" catted system. So im gonna look more into the dynomax muffler and see how that goes. Thanx guys...

I've had my car for 3 years now and have had 4-5 setups. What came with the car was Stainless Turbo muffler (thrush?) welded in place with a cat and resonator (looked custom), then I had a fire so I opted to switch it all out. I got 2.5" pipes and 2 big glasspacks... that sucked. I removed one glasspack and put a high flow cat in. Still sucked. Then, I kept the cat, got smaller pipes and had another turbo muffler put on and it was nice but the muffler got dented so that's when I got my ss fartcan put in. It was loud and I was losing my hearing fast so I got a resonator put back on after the linkage. Now it sounds good but it's still too loud so I'm just going to ditch the fartcan and get a dynomax. It should sound sweet. Trial and error sucks. All that time and bs I could have just gotten a DC sports or Thermal R&D cat-back. Live and learn I guess...

yes it does but thats why i wanted to see what other people had on their ride and opinion about what they have to see what my best posibilities are. so i think if i just get a good muffler like dynomax i should be good. and when i get it on i will record a sound bite so yall can use for your own desision making on this situation. thanx again guys for the input.

on my 1.5 i have a Thermal full cat back and i think it sounds really good. I just my opinion though. my Buddy has a 1.6 with Pace Setter that sounds really good to.

I had my stock 1.5L with a 2 1/4 magnaflow catback and to me and many other people it sounded fine. When i put my b20 in it and kept the same set up it just sounded a lot louder. but it still kept that fine sound. Im happy with it

lol my gf had a magnaflow on her 1.5 and it was more quite than stock. Personally I have always loved the sound of a real Apexi N1

looked at the dynomax website and found a couple different turbo mufflers to choose from. the 17786,17758,17739...the 39 is 19"L w/2.5"inlet offset and 2.5" dual out good for 385cfm...the 58 is 20"L w/2.5" inlet centered w/2.5" dual out good for 380cfm...the 86 is 21"L w/ 2.5" inlet centered w/ 2.25" dual out good for 415cfm. So now my Q is what size flow do i need? With 3" iceman intake 2.5" piping and custom cams, i dont know what my cfm is now. Any1 who has a dynomax muffler on there crx or better yet a ZC would help also. THANX GUYZ

ok muffler update...got the 17758 dynomax muffler put in today,2.5in and dual 2.5out. Well as the tone is alittle deeper i still have that same ol rasp that i tried to get rid of. So now my next move might be to put in a real resinator after my gutted cat "resinator", im also thinkin that im gonna have to throw in a turbo soon to fully justify having the 2.5" piping. or what if i put a 2.25" sized cat on like the stock one, do u think it would give me decent backpressure since BP is good(from what i hear) for a N/A motor. I am a combustion technician and when i fire a burner for an oven at the right mixture the burner will howl as a product of the mixture being set correctly, do you think i get this rasp when im at the right mixture like i would with a burner, or is it something different?

A resonator may help. A true cat, even hi flow cat would help as well. Instead of a rasp you'd get a blargle sound, especially upon deceleration... feels like the car drives itself... back pressure.
I've been considering the dynamax mufflers because in my case, my 14" long fart can sound great when getting on it even though it's still loud with a hi flow cat and a resonator (2" pipes to 2.25" clean final loop), but in regular driving conditions between 3-3.5k rpms it goes blick blick blick blag and it drives me crazy!!!!!!!
Anyway, I had 2.5" pipes with no cat for awhile and it was just a lot of weight and made me use more gas to get that weight around it seemed (no back pressure)...
Don't go smaller diameter for cat cuz it'll just clog your flow.

how much of a weight difference could there be between 2.25" and 2.5" piping. plus the muffler on now is 20" long.

i got a 01 eclipse muffler and it sounds good.... when im idoling (cant spell) you cant even hear it, when im on the highway, you cant hear it... when i get on it, it sounds deep and tuned.... i love it... looks stock too... $50

ok goin to the muffler shop to put on a resinator for $75. I hope this makes an improvment i dont want to go back to a cat if i dont have to. Also gotta put on new tips too.

Oh just wondering... i have a HP Racing header on, the O2 sensor is in 1 of the 4 down pipes to the first 4-2 flange. Would the sensor work better or worse if i moved it to a spot where all the exhuast runs through or where the double pipe is?

Since the stock position is on one of the runners/tubes it probably doesn't make much difference, but my DC has it down at the end just before the cat... I've heard opinions about both but haven't seen any actual proof of difference in performance...

ok back from the muffler shop and holly cow what a difference the resinator makes. still has that lil rasp to it, but the whole tone and volume is so low its barely noticable. so thanx to all that helped, i hope to be able to do the same for yall sometime.
