My friend Mikes car (hes "elhi" in the sig, he has the 91 TSI AWD) is finally all fixed and is now in the mod process. He owes me damn near $200 for helping him get this bitch quiet, able to stop, and able to hold oil and his sister a few bucks for enough money to actually buy the car. In the next 3 weeks he will have her and me paid off, and we will be able to start monkeying with it some more. We are going to mod this car in waves. First we are going to get a boost guage, mbc, intake pipe, and K&N filter. Hopefully, we will get those mods on by the end of November. Over the winter we plan on building that computer for the glove compartment, getting a flip down screen, and getting DSM link. Then later next summer/fall comes the fuel system, 20g, rebuilt engine, clutch and on and on. So heres my question: We want to get the intake pipe in a couple weeks, but we also want it to work with his 20g. The intake at SBR said that 2 3/4" would work for 14b, 16g, and 20gs but it also said that 3" would work for 20g's. So which size should we get? What about BOV recirculation? The gm maf allows you to vent to atmosphere right? Are there any other benefits to the gm maf? Does venting to the atmosphere help with any performance, or is it merely for a louder BOV sound? I think I am all questioned out, thanks for any inputs guys!

for an intake id check www.dejonpowerhouse.com or www.injen.com....
dejon is a little cheaper and have just as good quality as injen.... but honestly 2.5 or 3 is fine and it really depends on the 20g u get there are a couple diff kinds bastard 20g is a 20g in a 16g's so the inlet would be smaller there...but pesonally id go w/ 2 1/2...when dealing w/ bigger turbo's it will be hard to fit a 3'
the bov recirc if you just disconnect the recirc tube the car will run like crap how ever if u do the gm maft u wouldnt half to use the the old maf which is more restrictive....and yes it will be alot louder...
after looking at al the upgrades u were going to do..id so going w/ an exhuast would be one of the first's id do

For a 20g I would go with 3' I mean the bigger the intake the more air flows into the turbo right?
Also the difference between a vented bov with a gm maf and a recirculated one is not much. Just a loud noise. I would just stay with a recirculating bov unless you want to spend the extra money on the gm maf.

I don't think running a 3 foot intake pipe is necessary :)
Hell, do it POS racing style and hook it up with genuine Home Depot Racing parts.
The reason that people run GM MAF's is either A: They want an easier or simplier setup as far as intake in concerned, and they want to vent to the atmosphere; or B: They actually have a reason to run this setup because they have overrun their stock mas (~50lbs/min or so on the 2g). This being the actual benefit to running that setup.
Another quick note; with a 20g, you will not be overrunning a 2g mas. The best you can do even with cams (that typically give a gain or 3-4lbs/min) is ~48lbs/min give or take. That is maxed out, and running very nicely.
Venting to the amosphere does not really help with performance, it's only done this way with a MAFT setup bechause it doesn't make any sense not to. This being when it's setup in Blow-through.

Aboslutely true in the sense of what is specifically at hand here. There won't be a difference because of what type of airlfow there will be. Now say you are running an FP 3065, That would require something more as far as air metering.
You can also tune using a MAFT as well.
I would definately stay with a stock mas. I forget what the deal is with 1g's, but I know for 2g's that you won't need anymore more then the stock mas.

Already done. Thanks guys I appreciate your help, I thought this thread died a week ago ;). I dont think a GM MAF is something we want to screw around with if its not needed. Would the 2g MAF just plug and play intstead of the 1g?

I second the Home Depot Intake.... by far the cheapest and works just as good if not better than anything you could buy.

Good info. I'll just add a couple things. The GM-MAFT setup can be used both vented and recirculate. Dejontool sells both UICP or Intake pipes to accomidate this. Recirculating your Blowoff will keep your turbo spooled up durring shifts wich has it's obvious advantages in Autocross.
Fullthrottle has their new GM-MAFT Pro out sence early last month. Its a more user designed & frendly LCD screen and happens to utilize Speed Density. Their is NO drawback to using the MAFT setup other then the initual cost of the pipeing, sensor, and device. like said above, its less restrictive, flows more then the 20g, and tuneable. I will buy one someday.

I just printed off instructions for the home depot intake and Mike is coming over in about 2 hours to get started. We decided that a home depot intake would be ok for the 14b for now, like that one guy said "Mod cheap, mod twice." We need to check his turbo for shaft play, the car smokes a little :uhoh: and we think its the turbo. My brother is going to buy my Cavalier sometime this winter in which case I get my DSM and it gets modded. I dont want my DSM to be driven daily after a while and a Starion (2.6L turbo RWD 4 banger :evillol:)is next in my sights. For the Starion I plan on making it as fast as I can for X amount of money (~$500, homemade intake, exhaust, MBC, and whatever else I can make to make it faster and it will be gutted) and home made intake knowledge will help on that. Thanks for your advice guys.
