Cleaning ceiling

I noticed that my ceiling is filthy from years of smoking, outside dirt, and whatever else. It's the thin cloth type ceiling and I don't want it to start hanging after cleaning it. I was thinking steam cleaning it, but I'm afraid the heat will loosen the glue underneath. Anyone know of a safe method to clean this type of ceiling?

To the original poster: I would not attempt to steam clean the headliner. I have a funny feeling that you will seperate it from the roof. If you do attempt to steam clean it, I would try it on a section in the corner out of sight.
Might be best just to replace it.

before you replace it. try gettin a soft rag and some foam type window cleaner. spray the foam window cleaner and let it sit for a sec to break down shit. then rub. do this over and over.

Why do I smoke in my car?
A. Because I can
B. Because I want to
C. Because it's the oldest car I own
D. Why do you care?, does it have an effect on you?
E. What spyderturbo007 told you
To everyone else, thank you for normal replies that are actualy usefull and understandable. Anyone know how hard it would be to replace the headliner? I'm gonna try to clean first, but if all fails, the only option I have is to replace.
