SS/SC vs. C5 Corvette

I was heading to my buddies' party yesterday morning with my g/f in the car. When we got got off the freeway and started heading West we ended up behind a silver, C5 vette with a nice, gurgly exhaust. We cruized along behind the vette dude for a mile or so, listening to him do a wot run every so often, then he'd slow back down. This behavior didn't seem too typical of the normal Haiwian shirt wearing, kaki shorts clad, ponied-tailed vette owner. So I pulled along side of him to take a look at who might be at the wheel, and apon closer inspection I saw a guy who I swear looked just like Bill Gates in a T-shirt and giant eye glasses. I said to my g/f, "Hey, check this guy out." She laughed and said he looked like a doofus, which made me laugh even more. This is the second time I've recently seen a goofy older guy driving a sport car that just doesnt look like he belongs in it. The other was an Evo MR.
Anywho, he noticed us checking out him and his ride so he dropped it down a gear at about 45 mph and opened it up. I couldnt pursue as I had a car in my lane, so I let him tear off down the road. I leisurely passed the car in front of me and caught back up to Vette dude at a light. We took off from the light normaly and this time I was ready for him with no immediate traffic in our way. I held it next to him at about 50 mph in 3rd gear.
As soon as I heard start to wind it up I jumped on it and so did he. We stayed there next to eachother for a few seconds then he started pulling ahead a bit, but not as fast as I figured he would. I rapped out 3rd gear with him slowly pulling ahead. By the time I hit the rev limiter for 3rd gear he was about half a car ahead or so. I didn't feel the need to shift into 4th to continue pursuit on him as the ahead traffic that wasn't so immediate before was right in front of us now. I hit the brakes and he kept the throttle burried, changing lanes and blazing by a mini van. He probly brought it up to 110-120 before he got off it. I wanted to get next to him to talk a bit and give him a thumbs up, but he never slowed down enough to do so, so I continued on my way to the party.

C5 isn't all THAT great, lol.
We are working on a new thing for the Z06, instead of traditional engine mounts it will have a magnesium engine cradle (provided by the company I work for). This is still in the works last time I checked, but if it "works" it will be a huge deal not only for us but GM can maybe get their sales back up and bounce back from their new title of "Grabage Stock"

What will be the benefit of the craddle as apposed to the stock style mounts? Are the factory mounts that weak?

Nothing is wrong with pony-tails in Vettes. That's one of the prerequisites for owning one...I don't think nerd-guy got the memo ;)
The glasses on the other hand...common. Heh.

I knew someone would say that as well...
I would, but I've maxed out the characters in my sig. Maybe I'll take some of the kills out to add any new deaths. Later tho, too lazy right now.

I did mess up on one important detail now that I look think about it. It wasnt a 3rd gear run for me, it was 2nd gear. Cause there's no way I was doing 105 mph when we shut down (thats where 3rd redlines).
It was more like a 35-40 mph roll ending at around 60-65(2nd gear redline). My bad for the mistake, I blame it on my ADD. :biggrin:

So he "slowly pulled away" from a 35-40mph roll till 60-65? That is like a second and a half race, if that.

Tru...but I still think he at least needed a pony-tail.
Good thing about it being him instead of some yuppie is that he ACTUALY used his car for what it's made for. Not just to prance around showing wealth at 5 mph under the speed limit.

I know I know! I ran out of room in my sig though...I can't add any more characters, and I'm not getting rid of the death-by-dirt mound!
There are like 5 or 6 more kills that need to be added to the list as well but arent up cause of space issues.

As for goofy drivers, yeah i know what you mean. A while back i was driving up state with my GF when i see a vette fly past me, nice 06-05 yellow, the liscense plate said "Nerd 1" when i caught up the guy he was the biggest looking chinese nerd i had ever seen. But he had a a nice car.
Also it seems everytime i go to the trace track, i see some old guy who looks like a muscle head type guy get in his srt4 and go race, its pretty funny.

He could have been in a higher gear and didn't think to downshift. I'm not discrediting the cobalt ss. They are quick cars. But staying only a half a car behind a c5 corvette?
He was probably in 4th gear. The c5 corvettes have that crappy 1-4 skip-shift feature.

That only works from a stop, when you're in 1st gear under part throttle. If you go past 3/4 throttle or about 3,000rpm it disables itself.
From a roll it doesn't have any effect.

Oh I stand corrected. But I'm confused because In his post he said they took off from the light normaly.
I leisurely passed the car in front of me and caught back up to Vette dude at a light. We took off from the light normaly and this time I was ready for him with no immediate traffic in our way.
So is possible that the corvette driver shifted from 1st to 4th?
I held it next to him at about 50 mph in 3rd gear.
what if the corvette driver was cruising at 50 in fourth?
As soon as I heard start to wind it up I jumped on it and so did he. We stayed there next to eachother for a few seconds then he started pulling ahead a bit, but not as fast as I figured he would. I rapped out 3rd gear with him slowly pulling ahead. By the time I hit the rev limiter for 3rd gear he was about half a car ahead or so. I didn't feel the need to shift into 4th to continue pursuit on him as the ahead traffic that wasn't so immediate before was right in front of us now.
Is it possible that the corvette was in fourth that whole time? Maybe the corvette owner wasn't a bad driver, maybe he figured he would be able to take him in 4th.
I don't know a whole lot about the Getrag tranny in those corvette's so If I don't make any sense let me know.

Haha...that reminds me of something I saw at the Pavilions car show the other weekend. While I was walking around checking out the cars I came up to this black srt4 that had red neons in the engine compartment and more red neons under and inside the car. It also had chrome wheels, a fire extinguisher INSIDE the engine compartment(WTF)
and had srt4 stage 3 badges. It was NOT a stage 3. I looked around a bit and I found the owner/builder...a friggin 45 plus year old guy! I laughed. Old rice.

Do corvettes have a gretag tranny? I thought they had the T56 in them as well?
soapsuds22
10-19-2005, 12:17 PM
I'm not really sure. Maybe just the gears are getrag. i found this
The six-speed manual transmission supplier is new to the Corvette. Borg-Warner Automotive is supplying it's T56, which is simular to the transmission used successfully in Camaros and Firebirds since 1993. The gearboxes are made in Muncie, Ind., and shipped to Getrag Gears of North America, Newton, N.C., where they are bolted to their differential dance partner. Corvette engineers kept the clutch assembly in it's normal location at the front of the car (mated to the engine's flywheel) to avoid conflict with the shift linkage. The downside is a tougher life for synchronizers inside the transmission, because they have extra rotating inertia and friction to manage during each shift. To increase synchronizer capacity and assure smooth shifting, a special three-cone design is used in both first and second gears. Third through sixth gears, and reverse, use double-cone synchros. These upgrades provide adequate surface area to properly synchronize both up and down shifts, while also reducing effort at the shift lever. The rear transaxle location means that the shift lever no longer emerges directly from the gear box into the driver's right hand. Most of the linkage is still contained internally, for a precise, well lubricated feel and long life. A shift mechanism, mounted to the torque tube, is linked to the transmission's shift lever by means of one long rod with couplings on each end. LuK Incorporated of Wooster, Ohio, supplies the Corvette's clutch assembly. Normal wear in the clutch disk's friction surface is automatically compensated for by permitting the pressure plate's diaphram spring to move forward in sync with the disk. This keeps the effort needed to disengage the clutch constant throughout the car's life. Durability test results suggest that the clutch should last more than 100,000 miles. A hydraulic slave cylinder mounted concentrically within the bell housing eliminates the need for a conventional throw-out bearing.

cool death.
not sure if you know or not, but my dad has a c5 vette that i drive alot(and race lol)
a lot of people try and take cars in lower gears to make the race more interesting, i do it all the time myself. actually about 20 minutes ago a 2002 or so civic tried racing me, i killed him in 5th gear at 60mph, wich for my car is very low rpms.
i've done it to a rsx-s a dozen or so 15 second cars celica, porche 944. lots of cars.
cause if he was really on it even for the 30mph run you had wich in a c5 vette would be about 2 second long its would have been a sloppy death.
just didnt want you to think that the next c5 you came across would have the same outcome.
regardless a low 13 high 12 second car is nothing to feel bad about loosing to. its a fast ass car
http://media.popularmechanics.com/images/tb_corvette.jpg
This car is amazing. Even with its CD player, its leather seats, its power everything, its active handling stability system - all those things that makes this car a very comfy daily driver - it can still lay down a 12-second run. Very, very impressive. Because it weighs a bit less than the Corvette Coupe or Roadster, Chevy asked us to use a hardtop model for this test. The Hardtop, which has a fixed roof, comes standard with all the Vette's go-fast equipment.
And it all works. Although powered by basically the same LS1 V8 as the Camaro and Firebird, the upscale Vette offers 345 hp to its driver.
Driving the Vette couldn't be easier unless it had an automatic. Its rear 18-in. tires bite like a rabid dog, getting the Vette out past the Christmas tree with plenty of momentum. Then the gear changes, just shy of the Vette's 6000 rpm redline, are a pleasure thanks to the car's strong clutch and friendly shifter. In its fifth generation, the Corvette's still got what it takes.

cool death.
not sure if you know or not, but my dad has a c5 vette that i drive alot(and race lol)
a lot of people try and take cars in lower gears to make the race more interesting, i do it all the time myself. actually about 20 minutes ago a 2002 or so civic tried racing me, i killed him in 5th gear at 60mph, wich for my car is very low rpms.
i've done it to a rsx-s a dozen or so 15 second cars celica, porche 944. lots of cars.
cause if he was really on it even for the 30mph run you had wich in a c5 vette would be about 2 second long its would have been a sloppy death.
just didnt want you to think that the next c5 you came across would have the same outcome.
regardless a low 13 high 12 second car is nothing to feel bad about loosing to. its a fast ass car

Test Summary:
Chevrolet Corvette
* Base price: $38,197, Price as tested: $40,237
* Engine: 5.7-liter/346.07 cu.-in. OHV 16v V8
* HP: 345 @ 5600 rpm, Torque: 350 ft.-lb. @ 4400 rpm
* Trans: 6M, Drivetrain: front engine/rear drive
* Rear axle: 3.42:1 limited-slip
* Curb weight: 3174 lb, Weight/HP ratio: 9.2
* HP/liter: 60.5, Tires: f: 245/45ZR17, r: 275/40ZR18
* Acceleration: 0-30 mph: 1.95 sec. 0-60 mph: 4.74 sec.
* 1/4 mile: 12.98 sec. @ 108.85 mph
I'm no fool. This is why I said I think he was in 3rd while I was in 2nd. I dunno if you missed that part or not. 3rd gear at 35 mph even in a Vette will still be a bit doggy while trying to run another fairly quick car that's actually in a good gear.

Some more worthless info.
Although powered by basically the same LS1 V8 as the Camaro and Firebird, the upscale Vette offers 345 hp to its driver.
Note: Factory LS1 powered F-Bodies have approximately the same Horsepower and Torque rating as the C5 Corvette of their perspective model years. GM actually underrates the specifications of the F-Body for C5 marketing purposes. Both the LS1 F-Body, and the C5 Corvette both show and average of 305rwhp on the dyno.

* Engine: 5.7-liter/346.0 cu.-in. OHV 16v V8
* HP: 320 @ 5200 rpm, Torque: 345 ft.-lb. @ 4400 rpm

Heh, I think it's funny when ppl call it a cavy. I really could care less because the only thing it really shares with the cavy are the ecotec and the bowtie.

ehh whatever, i dont really care anymore. stock cavaliers are slow.
c5 vettes are slow. God man those things couldnt out run a geo metro. And dont get my started on that shitty LS1 motor. GM over rates the crap outa those engines. Id rater have a 1.6L Vtecool motor than a LS1. Plus Fbodies are ugly and if you own one you have to have a mullet and a bad attitude. Most of the time when i see a Fbody driving around, theres a GUY in the passenger seat. Makes me wonder. . . I once heard a story about a gay Fbody owner, he had his partner sit on his lap and would gas and break the car to have sex with him.
LMAO im totally kidding
