94' tranny wont shift from 1st.

I just bought this car from a freind for my 16 year old son. It had a leak on one of the tranny lines and he said he didnt drive it after that. We repaired the line, filled with fluid and all it will do is work in 1st or reverse. The fluid is not bright red, but it dont smell burnt. I read (on the internet)there is a fail safe mode re: the throttle cable. Can anyone shed some light on this or do need another tranny??? Thanks for the help..

my friend has the same problem on his taurus(wondering how good of a car a taurus can be). Im pretty sure the govenor is gunked up, some time this week im gunna travel to his appartment and take a look, maybe replace the govenor.
