clutch question 98

I have a friends 98 escort over tonight and when driving it the clutch pedal almost has to go to the floor to release the clutch. Brake fluid is full and the slave cylinder is dry under the boot seal and moves quite a distance.

Not ever having one of these apart before what typically fails on these clutchs.

The car has 80K on it and it does drive well and does not slip in gears. Do the pressure plates fail causing this condition and if so what is the typical time that it takes before it just will not release the clutch? :eek7:

My Escort has 261,000 miles on it and I've never done anything to the clutch so you're problem sounds unusual. I'd say the seals on the clutch master cylinder or clutch slave cylinder are bad.
