I bought my Civic a little less than a year ago and dont know that much about it cuz the guy didnt have the manual to go with it. I'v been told that because the first letter of the vin # starts with a "J" it was made in Japan. so dose that mean my car is "JDM" or dose it have to be one of those cars with the steering wheel on the right side of the car to be Jdm? can you guys clear this up for me? thanx

No. Your car is not a Japanese model. If it was, then it's be right hand drive. Who ever told you that thing about the "J" is an idiot, and you should never listen to them.

No your car is not from Japan. Whoever told you that should be shot and killed immediatley. A japanese car wouldn't even be legal to drive here in the states. ALL true japanese car (and many other countries for that matter) have RHD. There should be a black tag saying "honda of...(where ever the car was made)" on the bumper support. Also I'm pretty sure if you get a carfax report on it, that might tell you where the car originally came from.

You can legally drive a RHD car in the US. And the "Honda of..." tag isn't always right. My CX was made in Canada and shipped for sale in the states. I know this because the Canadian CX's have the same engine as the DX, and I've got the shitty little 70hp beast under my hood.

And whoever told you that needs to be shot immediately.

Actually JDM is "Japanese Domestic Market" so no you car is not JDM but you'r car is USDM. Also when the first letter in the VIN is a J it DOES mean that the car was produced in Japan the same as if the first letter were to be a W that would mean your vehicle was manufactured in Germany. S means England, K is Korea, 3 is Mexico, 2 is Canada, and 1 or 4 is U.S. This is quoting my automotive apprentice text book. I hope that this has cleared somethings up for you.

blue92HB is absolutly correct. Whoever told you that the first letter of your VIN #, J, ment that the car was MADE in Japan was correct. Notice they didn't say it ment the car was "JDM." They said that the first letter, J, , ment the car was made in Japan. The first letter of a VIN # always tells you what country the automobile was manufactured and produced in. J means the car was made and produced in Japan. Pretty much everything in the VIN means something, whether it be just a serial number (like the last numbers) or the chassis code, the motor type, etc. One of the letters in the VIN # even tells you which factory the car was produced at.

QUICK_EG_B16A, Zedex, and all the others who are saying that whoever told albarran9 that the J in the VIN ment his car was made in Japan was wrong...Who told him that was correct. They never said it was JDM...he simply asked if that ment it was JDM. Well, no, it does not mean that. It simply means what you were told...that the car was made in japan, that japan was it's country of origin. Also, QUICK_EG_B16A, there is a letter on the car that tells WHERE the car was made.

The first letter of the VIN #. This letter tells you the country of origin...where it was made. A letter further down the line tells you what factory produced the car. As blue92HB said, the J in the VIN # ment that the car was Made In Japan. You don't need a carfax report of a "tag on the car" to tell you where a car was made and at what factory. Thats what the VIN # tells you. You just have to know how to read a VIN # so you know what all the letters and numbers mean. I suggest you do some research and try to learn some, it can come in very handy.

albarran9, your car is not JDM. A JDM car was one that was sold brand in Japan, one that was sold on the japanese domestic market. Your car was sold in the United States, so it is a USDM vehicle, like most of ours. The J in the Vin # simply means what you where told it does. It means the cars country of origin was Japan, it was made in Japan.
