Higher or Lower?

Everyone gets a piece, helping me decide whether I should raise or lower my car. I just replaced my struts and the stance is the SAME. This is strange because I think the rear suspension has eibach springs as well. Anyway, the solution i'm looking for isn't to fix the stance but what I should do. My Iroc-Z looks like a funny car right now, which isn't a bad thing, but I'd rather raise it to stock height or drop it 1"++ all round.

What do you think I should do? Lower it or Raise it? Are there advantages to keeping it stock over lowering it? I know dropping it gets you better handling...It's in your hands, what say you, car gods?

if you lower it keep the back a little higher then the front and get some wide tires, it will look mean

i would like to lower mine an inch or so but where i live near so many hills i dont think its worth it to me....but if i lived in flat land i would definately want it lowered!

Lower is better, an inch would be good that way the wheels are completely tucked under the car. Put some nice 275's or wider out back and that will make it look just fine

Yeah lower the front and wider tires in the back.. pure mean look, something that the 3rd gen's front nose IMO really helps out in.

im no fan of the redneck rake (front low ass high... well I like that on girls but not cars). what are the car's main uses? DD? handling? drag? it matters

Daily Driver, as for how I want it to look, road racing.
Almost everyone has said wider tires in the back but I like it if the car looks equal, front and back. I tried to take a picture tonight but my camera phone sucks and it doesn't really work at night...not even indoors...

There's your redneck rake 97RS

Some dissatisfaction comes from when you spend weeks on a project and when you finish there's no difference. This is the case.

well since you want it for handling, you wanna get some heavy duty shocks if not adjustable shocks, and also lower it a little. Eibach and Hotchkis are two good names to check out for springs, I hear that Eibachs tend to sag in the rear tho and that Hotchkis rides better (dont know how true either or those are but that's the word). QA1 and Bilstein are some good names for shocks.

i have eibach... haven't noticed any sag in my rear... its nice and tight :icon16:

I just about to ask you about what shocks and springs you got Dave. Are the KYB AGX ajustables shocks good. What drop did you get with the eibachs? I've seen some listed as 1" drop all around or something like 1.6" front and 1.3" back (not too sure on the exact numbers, but around those). I went over a dip in the ground (at the time i didn't know that all shocks were out) and my car hit the ground real hard. Sucks.

Savage Messiah

1" drop = pro-kit, 1.6/1.3" drop = sportline

i have the prokit with bilstien shocks and struts idk about kyb shocks... i've never used them before, i only use bilstien

raise and put a 3 inch exhaust on there. If u can lower it and still put a 3 inch, lower it then!

Savage Messiah

4 inch??? You mean 3 I hope

and airbags costs way 2 much...

Savage Messiah
10-18-2005, 08:18 PM
airbags suck, if you want to have adjustable suspension for performance get adjustable shocks (HAL QA1 = teh win)

Matt365
10-18-2005, 08:21 PM
how much are those? and is there any thing else u need to buy besides to shocks to put them on a 4th gen?

Savage Messiah

its reccomended to do springs and shocks both, but i also know a lot of people with stock springs adn upgraded shocks... stock shocks w/ upg springs sucks tho

I figure I didn't need really expensive shocks, although I would have and may in the future go with Koni. I like QA1 but they don't make any struts for third gens.

Thanks everyone for their advice, I'm probably going to lower the car, how much is slammed? If I already have eibach pros on the front, should I buy new ones? since the shocks were dead I'm thinking the coils are compressed. They're black so they look like eibach pros but they drop the car 2 inches in the front.

Savage Messiah
10-18-2005, 09:11 PM
well all high quality shocks/struts are n the pricey side unfortunately. QA1's are probably around the top of the pack :(

lower the back raise the front.

I'm curious as to how that would look if you mean having the front higher than the back..

Anyway, I just checked under my car, and found more problems...but as for the springs, all 4 are black and like I said the front is about 2 inches lower than the front. The rear springs are very thin and have no lettering while the front springs are very thick and say made in germany with white numbers, so i'm thinking the rear still have the stock springs but the front has eibach pro after all. Is this right? what do stock third gen springs look like?

Savage Messiah
10-18-2005, 11:10 PM
that woudl be very bad, you want matching springs all around lol

Dyno247365
10-18-2005, 11:19 PM
My rear end is from america while my front end is from germany, now do I really want all german parts? ...yes, yes Indeed.

Does someone have a picture of the stock springs so I know for sure?

Yeah thats what I meant. I've seen it done before but not on a camaro. It was an 80's mustang I saw like that. I saw it at a track once. It shifts the center of mass towards the rear wheels for better traction. With the front lower you only get better traction at speed, but with the front end higher you get better traction for the launch.

I'm not a launcher, i'm an in the moment guy, more like a tearing it up guy. But that's a novel idea, looks like it would work

again adjustable shocks would be good for you, turn em up pretty tight so if you decide to carve up some corners you're set... or turn em down low for a nice smooth ride... or ssomething in between

Can you tell that QA1s are on my mod list?? lol

If you want to keep it simple buy a set of matched springs, any brand you like. I would go no lower than 1.5" of drop if you want a car you can live with. Stock is not bad, kinda makes it a sleeper not to mention daily driving will not be as harsh. I would forget the QA1's due to cost if you are not a pro racer. You can put too much focus in one area of a car only for the rest of the car to be very lacking in what you want. If it looks cool and doesn't perform, then you may not be happy with it. Rear up front down handles like a dead fish. Nose up only for the quarter mile or less. Too far in any direction with just springs and struts will screw with your suspension geometry.

I just learned for this guy what it took me a month to figure out, effin brilliant man, effin brilliant. Like he said, it's better to skimp on the suspension until you need it, while a saved 500 goes toward new brakes. How much better does it handle on say a 1.5 drop all around?

actually suspension makes a huge huge difference and plays a major role in racing, makes the car feel like a totally different car.

suspension has a 2002 5spd 3.8 camaro with only 4.10s, intake/exhaust and weight reduction run 13.5s
