I bought a 1996 Taurus sedan with a broke rod to fix for my daughter... A friend of mine told me I could have his 1992 Taurus wagon to pull the motor out of and put in the sedan... (92k miles/bad tranny) Will the 92 motor work in the 96? If so how big a pain to get it to work right? Both have the V6 3.0 and the "U" vin number... Any help would be appreciated!!!
THANKS!!!

yes it will fit buy yhe pain will be that you will need to switch wiring harness, and possibly some of the eec parts ,because of the wiring issues. good luck ,happy motoring to your daughter .

the '92 is OBD1 and the '96 is OBD2, you will need to swap all the wiring from the '92 onto the '96 as well as the transmission since the '92's computer won't be able to control the AX4S in the '96. Its way more work than its worth, just get a '96-'99 motor, they're only like $400.

Thanks for the info... Would it work if I did it like a long block? In that I mean tear them down to just the block and heads and use the intake, exhaust, etc from the 96 and put them on the 92 motor? It's more that I'd rather use a known good motor than the 400ish for a different motor that you have little info on...

THANKS again to all who read and reply!!!!

you might be able to get away with using the block and internals from the '92, maybe the heads too, but you'll definitely need the accessories and manifolds from the '96 in order to run the '96 ECU.

i have a 99 taurus 3.0 and used a 93 motor in it.used block and heads only swaped everthing from mine to it. runs and drives great. did not change wiring harness. needed to chang front timing cover for crank sensor and use later model motor mounts

Don't know where you live, but by me ( in CT) you can pick up a motor with a 90 day warranty from a junk yard. I don't think they are that expensive. I know a trany is 350.

The block and heads should work fine no problems.

You may have to use your old intake manifold.

You would just use the harness that is in the 96 and take any sensors off of your 96 and swap onto the good block.

And then you'll have a '96 with an old engine of questionable condition.
