94 Trans Problem

My Dad's Ram just left him sit. He had all gears when he left home, he got about a mile down the road and lost everything. Fluid doesn't smell burnt but when you put in neutral it makes a chattering sound. I read somewhere that there is a plastic checkball in the trans lines that go to the radiator and that causes problems sometimes. But any help would be great. 1 /2 Ton 2wd

Does sound like a problem. How many miles? If it's high mileage, you may be looking at a rebuild.

Hi again thanks for the response. His truck has over 130,000. I just started pulling out the trans today. Do you have any helpful hints? Also do you know anything about the plastic checkball in the tranny line? I read that somewhere.. Thank You Spoonman

Pulling the trans I would say to make sure it's supported while you take out the bolts holding it to the backside of the engine. On small cars like Honda or whatever, you can lift the trans with one hand; the Dodge unit is going to be a LOT heavier.

Other than the usual, like disconnect all the electrical/fluid connections/etc, don't have any other advice.

As far as the check ball, apologies but I don't know about it.

The check ball is up the radiator it must be replaced!! Also make sure you have the flow right when you install it or you will burn up the trans again (this also happens if you don’t replace it because if blocks of cooler flow if its plugged.) Dodge has them and they are not to much $$. It is a drain back valve, I took mine out and put a piece of line in now in the morning it delays so I just let it sit in "N" for about 20 secs and then take off. Make sure you use ATF + 4 and fill and check the fluid level in "N".
