Alternator overcharging

I recently changed batteries in our 2001 Hoe. It originally had a sealed maitenance free battery. I ended up with a non sealed battery and now have a bad acid corrosion on the battery stand plate. I noticed that the battery had been leaking from the fill holes and down the side. I suspect a bad voltage regulator, though it is charging just around 14.5 volts. Is this too high of a voltage causing this.

Even if battery is new make sure it is good.
On the non sealed battery you can run a hydrometer on each cell. One cell a little weak will make a alternator overcharge
Is the charging voltage with every thing turned on or off and at 2000 rpm.
You also need to watch the amps. When a battery is charged up the alt should be putting very few amps in to it jusy enough to carry the load.
Check your charging specs for it to be sure but 14.5 on a full charged battery may be a little high.
A 12 volt batter voltage a full charge should read 13.2 volts 2.2 volts for each cell.
So charging voltage a little over that 13.8 -14 volts should keep battery charged up good.
Also some no sealed batterys have a bad habbit off spewing out a little acid.
Keep it washed off. good cold water bath helps wash them off.

Good information MT-2500, I appreciate it. I just happen to be at the place where I bought it today. They exchange it out and the volt meter has return to normal as when I bought it. I did not realize that a bad cell would cause the alternator to work harder, Thanks again....

You are welcome.
Yes a bad cell will do a lot of bad things.
It will cause over charge and cause a battery to go dead overnight.
Glad you got it fixed.
