My 2001 EB Expo 4x4 has begun shifting abruptly, sometimes it takes high revs to get it to shift out of 1st gear. The overdrive light has begun flashing. I changed the trans fluid with additive and it made no difference. Trans fluid is normal level. Any ideas?

You need to get it put on a eng/trans capable scanner and get codes and read out trans data.
What kind of fluid and add. did you feed it.
Was it a complete flush or just filter change?
How many miles are on it and what trans?
4R70W or 5R44E 0r 5R55E?
Post back code no.

I hate to sound dumb, but how do I tell what trans the car has? Q Lube did the fluid change, they said that it replaced 98% of the old fluid, which had 40,000 miles on it. They did not change the filter, as they did not drop the pan. I priced a code reader, it was $75, is this worth the price? If so, I will buy it. I will have to ask them what additive they used, and will post it. anyway, their fluid and additive made no change to the problem with the trans. Can this be a transfer case problem?

It is a tran related problem. Trans or wiring or trans pcm.
Quick lube is the worst place to get a trans serviced.
The service they gave you was a very poor and may have caused more damage to your trans.
I would say they put in a fit all fluid and throwed a bottle of additive in it. And not changing the filter is a poor way to service the trans.
Your trans needs to be flushed out and new filter and the right fluid added to it . The right fluid is the new ford fluid mercon V . Anything else will mess it up.
Also the band need checked or adjusted.
The trans can be idenfied by the shape of the pan or some have a id tag on them.
But first things first you need to get the codes.
Some parts places will give you a free code check.
But use caution on the free code checks.
Use Caution when getting the free code checks please.
Some parts places do offer free code checks. And also free repair advice. But beware. Just get the code no and post it back here and someone will help you.
They offer the free code checks in the hope of increasing there parts sales.
Almost all of them will also offer mechanical advice and some know what they are doing.
But just remember most of them are parts people pulling codes for free.
Not trained professional tech/mechanics. Even if they pull a 02-sensor code or another sensor related code it does always mean to replace that sensor and your problem will be fixed.
Please just get the code no and post it back here and we will help you.

Thanks for the response. I got under the car, there is a paper label on the side of the trans with some numbers and letters including:
F2, 1L3P and PRB-FT. Does this tell you the trans type?
The additve used was Heartland T3 ATF Converter.

Is the transmission type on a paper lablel on the trans, or on a blue metal tag?

Them no do not help much. Look at the shape of your trans oil pan and the look at a trans filter chart that has the trans pan shapes on it.
You will need to figure out what trans to get the right filter and band adjustment and to run down the trouble codes.
You will need to flush what ever they put in it out and change the filter and check band adjustment.
But first get the codes and post them back and we can go from there.

I checked the car's computer for trouble codes and found none at all. But the rough shifting persists, almost like it bypasses 2nd gear and goes directly to third. The tach shows about 3700 RPM then shifts, and drops to about 1200 RPM. Thoughts?

If the OD light has been blinking there should be a code in the memery/history or prsent.
Some times just a code check will not show the trans codes or point you to the problem.
You may need to get a dealer or a good repair shop to get it on a good eng/trans capable scanner and read trans data and check codes.
And another thing to have checked is the wiring going to the trans. Pull the plug on the trans and look for fluid in the plug.

I'll check this plug tonite. Looking at the trans yesterday, it appeared dry, but it is worth checking.

i belive the two tranny choices for that particular model are the light duty 4r70w and for heavy duty applications 4r100. the other two i believe are 5 speed autos not offered in the expedition.
