I recently purchased a 2006 G6 Coupe. After 1 week of driving, I have the following problems:

1. Driver’s Side Leaking – seat belt is always soaked, rugs are wet, door is wet, smell is getting bad from water
2. Steering – Intermittently, car is hard to steer and wheel becomes “stuck” in place as driving around turns.
3. Dashboard – Crackling sounds in dash board when defogger runs.
4. Window Shield – there are spots and lines that will not come clean. It’s hard to see out window at night.
5. Passenger Side Door – sounds as though there is something living in it.
6. Rough Idling – when stopped, the car vibrates and sometimes sounds as though it’s going to stall
7. Car Shimmies on the road when doing 65MPH, especially on an incline
8. Brakes – need to press down hard on brakes for car to stop, sound emanating from brakes
11. Remote Starter – doesn’t work sometimes. After 2nd time using it, it stopped working for a week.

Well I have an 05 G6 Sedan but can probably shed some light on a few things:

3. Dashboard – Crackling sounds in dash board when defogger runs. - This is perfectly normal, every G6 will do this and GM admits it. It's only for the first minute or so when firing up the defogger, not a big deal for me, I can certainly live with it.

5. Passenger Side Door – sounds as though there is something living in it. - Check the reflector, the little red one on the inside when you open it. When listening to AM stations or FM stations with deep bass you can hear the door make a very annoying sound, my dealer didn't do anything about this but I hammered it good with a rubber hammer and haven't heard my door making noises since.

Everything else though is something I have no experience with, since the car is fairly new and under warranty you should take your list to your dealer and tell them you want every issue resolved (we had a few quirks with our new Cobalt and the dealer actually rented us a car to drive in for a few days while they fixed it). I'm surprised the occasional rough start didn't make it to your list, this seems to happen with every G6 from time to time when it just doesn't startup too smoothly, hopefully they fixed that for the 06's.

Thanks for your reply. I have an appointment with the dealer this week. I just wanted to see if these issues were well known. I really don't mind the dashboard crackling. I can live with that. The water is a different story. I've been soaked all week going to work, lol. I got this car because I have to travel a long distance for work and started getting worried that I made the wrong choice in cars. I hope they can fix it and then I can stop worrying. Thanks again for the reply. I'm going to try the tip you gave me for the passenger side door.

1. Driverside leak, is probably due to either the seal around the door or possibly the back window isn't seated properly causing water to get in. Now that the rain has stopped, I would take a watering can or hose and pour water along the edges and see if you see it coming in, this way you can better inform the dealer.
4. for the windshield, is what you are experiencing a haze or film? if so, a lot of new cars get this. I found the best way to get it clean, is to bring it to a car wash and have them clean the windows or clean it well with a strong glass cleaner, Windex doesn't work that well. for whatever reason I've always gotten the best clarity from that.
7. You could possibly need a wheel alignment or wheel balancing.

Hopefully this helps you a little more.... good luck with everything and be persistant!

maureen no problem, let us know how everything works out. There's no need for you to put up with any problems such as the ones you described with a NEW car. GL and I hope you end up liking your G6 as much as I do mine.

Well in an odd way I'm glad that you have the same problem with your seat belts getting wet as I do. I have a 06' G6 GTP Coupe and my speakers kind of crackle in the back and my seat belts are soaked when it rains. The Pontiac dealer says they put new drains in for the sunroof, but i shortly found out that they still leak. What happened with your car anyways?

I have recently noticed the same problem on my G6 coupe with the seatbelts getting wet and they are beginning to smell like mildew. It makes it so that I don't even want to wear the seatbelt because it will make my clothes smell. I will be calling the dealer on Monday and I hope they fix this.

Well I did get the car fixxed after 3 trips to the dealer. Finally they called an engineer and he said the only way for them to get wet was for the side back windows to not be sealed properly. So they sent it to a trim shop and they put PRC around the windows. They changed my seat belts and changed the back seat cushions also. Since then its been great. So dont let them tell you you are missing the sun roof drains........ thats BS. Good Luck!

Chances are you're water leak may becoming from the vapor barrier on the door. GM decided for some reason to copy VW a number of years ago. I have run into Grand am's where if the vapor barrieir isn't stuck properly the water will run past the belt molding, reflect off the inside of the door and run out the bottom of the door panel and subsequently all over the floor. My wife also had a 2000 Focus you could have kept fish in, I fixed it with a Mcdonald's straw. you have to find the source first and that may well be a job for a good leak finder. If you just go pouring water around the edges of seams you will never isolate anything. Start at the bottom of the suspected area and work up slowly, use a water can not a hose. If the water comes in at least you know the height of the leak. Also look for water tracks, they are like footprints. One other trick you may want to try is to mix up some dish washing detergent and spry it on the car, roll up the windows and turn the heater on full. Any air leakage will be pinpointed by a big bubble.
