Knocking noise 01 GA advice needed

Hello I my GA just hit 91,000 miles and runs great but it always kinda had a slight knocking noise in the engine but lately I am beginning to notice it more.

A friend popped the hood and said it may be the lifters, he had a 92 GA and it had the same problems.

any way I can fix this myself or should I sell it or take it in?

thanks

I hate to have to ask but what size engine do you have? There are many problems that can exist but the 4cyl has different problems than the V6. If you have a 4 then I would suspect a timing chain issue the chain tensioners go bad and cause them to knock or possibly lifters. Worst case scenario bad low end bearings that would require a rebuild. If it is a V6 then you may have a rod bearing going bad or a main bearing on the crank. A lifter on the V6 would be a slight ticking noise.

I actually have a 4 cylinder engine. the sound seems to be coming right from the top of the engine inside that cover area

This sounds like a problem with the timing chain. Have it checked by a mechanic as it can be a DIY job with a lot of time and patience but not for someone with limited experience.

thanks I am actually gonna try the seafoam stuff first and hope that cures the problem.

I would definately have the timing chain changed by a mechanic. Its a pain and if you let it go too long you will have a lot bigger problem than a tapping or knocking noise. Bent valves really suck

yeah I tried the seafoam as suggested by some here but to no avail :disappoin

I am gonna take it to my mechanic on Monday which is tomorrow to get it diagnosed

I bet it's rod knock.

I bet it's rod knock.

well your bet was right :disappoin this sucks ...the car runs great it's still being paid on and my mechanic tells me its a rod bearing of some sort in the #4 cylinder. He says it takes $$$ to fix and its better to buy a new engine.

I am selling it with the listed problem. Another mechanic told me its better to drive it till it crumbles. Nice
