I just replaced a gas line in my 1967 and decided to take it out for a spin. When i got about eight miles down the road my engine started to rev extremely high when i pushed the clutch in. I'm talking 5000 rpms. so i stopped at a friends house and waited for it to cool. I also noticed that there was some oil in the bottom of the tin that came out of my dip stick. So i checked the oil and it was okay, checked the linkage to my caburators and adjusted it slightly but my bug is still having the same problem!!! can someone help me or direct me to someone who can?

Did you check and make sure your return springs are still there? Also make sure all your butterflies are working correctly, Ive seen the butterflies come off the shaft and cause the engine to rev out of control.

okay i'll check that... but my brother also told me that it may be a vaccuum leak... i'll check on that tonight, but do you think that would cause the problem?

A vacuum leak would cause it to idle a little higher but not out of control. If the vacuum leak is big your car would run like crap or not at all. Also make sure that your accelerator pumps arent froze up.

Oh yea, also check your rollers on your accelerator pumps. When I got my carbs one of the rollers were missing and would cause the pump to get stuck open.

make sure the cable from your pedal to linkage is not getting stuck anywhere. mine would get stuch and i had to re route the whole cable.

i figured the problem out... my carburators were actually just really dirty... but when i had gotten it home after the carb issue i actually burned the clutch up so anyone know how to figure out which clutch is the best for the size engine i've got?
