Supercharger Question.

I was looking through supercharger kits and man they are expensive as hell. For an S-trim kit for my 5.0 the best prices i could find were around $2,900, and there is no way i can afford that right now or any time soon since i am saving for school. I would say my limit would be more around $500 right now, since i just baught a new stall converter and some tires and a lot of my modification money is gone.
So i started looking for used supercharers but I didnt find much but when i asked a friend of mine who has a 91 ford supercoup that doesnt run, he told me he'd give me the supercharger off it if it would fit and everything. I know i probably wouldnt see much power from this if i even get it to work but i thought i would ask anyways.
So what would be involved in getting a supercoup supercharger to fit my 1990 5.0? could it be done for $500?
Also, i dont know the size of this supercharger but what would it have to run to mach the airflow of like a, like a novi1000 running 8 psi, or could the supercoup sc spin that fast?
Oh and if you guys could throw me a few webpages to learn more on these things or even learn more about superchargers in general that would be cool
Thanks

You mean a turbocharger? You would have to run twins.

FLIP!!!!! You dissapoint me!! It's a Thunderbird SuperCoupe, not firebird!! And 351 I think he's talking about the later T-Birds which were supercharged not the mid 80's turbo cars. I have no idea how to make that supercharger fit. You have to make sure that the top of the intake and the bottom of the supercharger fit together. That supercharger helped the 3.8 make 225hp so I'm sure it would probably help a 5.0 get atleast an extra 25-50 horse (just guessing). GOOD LUCK!!

Oh sorry about the confusion, thunder bird and fire bird, ill make sure not to confuse them in the future.
but yes your right that was the one i was refurring to, i like the idea of superchargers, but the more i learn, the more i like the sound of installing nitrous on my car. its simple, easy, cheap, and most importantly it makes a boat load of power heh.
plus i dont want to tie up a lot of money making the sc fit seeing as im saving for school.

Yeah Flip, don't let it happen again, or I'll have to put the smack down on your @$$. You know better than to mix up a Ford with a gm product! Yeah, even if you had a Vortech or Paxton that was made for the 5.0 it's takes some work to install, same with turbos. Sure, you could get the T-bird supercharger from your friend for cheap, you would probably have to do alot of work to make it fit and/or have special parts made. I don't blame you for thinking that way though, were all trying to get some hp for cheap. Look into it and see if it could work, hell, if it will work and you can make atleast another 50hp I think it would be worth it. A friend of mine took 2 Buick Grand National turbochargers and put them on his 5.0 (along with the basic bolt-ons) and he is has around 400hp. He spent alot of time on it though. He almost gave up. Any time you take something that was made for a v6 and try to make it work on a v8 you know you'll have alot of $$ and time in it. In the long run I think I would just go with nitrous also. Like you said, cheaper, easier. You can also get more power with it. Good luck man!!

N2O is not cheap! Plus unless if you have a progressive way to make it hit, its a pretty big shock to the engine, unless you just talking about a 50 shot.
Turbos are and will be the best power adder!

I was thinking more along the lines of a 100-150 shot.
And i ment that it is cheap compaired to turbocharging or supercharging, especialy if you can build your own system. And it is reasonably safe too, with the proper safty equiptment.
the main downside is that you have to refill your bottle once every couple weeks or so, depending on how much you use it.

10lbs bottle will only last about 8 1/4s, so 2 miles if it was run all at once. Not long at all. Rough numbers, but close. Then its another $40-$50 bucks for another fill. Here it runs about $65 for a refill. While the boost power is always there.

Any of the big 3 power adders get expensive. Blowers and turbos are more in one big bang, but the n20 stuff does catch up sooner or later.

I have a complete Zex system, that I am trying to sell. If your intrested, make an offer, just remember N2O can stick open, so you better run a remote shut off.

My vote goes to N2O as well. Best bang for the buck if you don't have a lot of cash. I recommend a Zex nitrous kit because of the safety if provides for newer users. On a stock motor a 75-100 hp shot should do you just fine. Lots of fun on the street, but gets expensive if your gonna hang out at the track.

well n2o my opinion i dont favor it, i always like superchargers (no lag, doesnt need to refill) just like a one time fee and ur set

Supercharges do lag :) Just depends on which ones you're talking about ;)

Another thing I would like to add is that superchargers and turbos are a lot more expensive and time consuming to install. When I first bought my supercharger I thought that I was pretty much finished with the bulk of the expense. It wasn't, soon came bigger injectors, bigger Mass air meter, additional fuel pumps tunning and a new clutch:rolleyes:. Just a few of the basics you can expect.
Have fun.
