transfer case fluid

I have a 1989 trooper 4WD...I'm going to change the fluid in the transfer case. My book says to use ATF. I know with automatic transmissions, there are at least two different types and they have specific appliacations. Does it matter with a transfer case??
Thanks

Hi,
I have used Mobil 1 synthetic ATF with great results. Since it is a synthetic fluid it works in almost anything and you can increase the interval between fluid changes.
Hope this helps

Hi,
Your right, I forgot to add that I changed the fluid in the tranny as well, Use it in the transfer case and tranny of my Nissan Pickup as well, I noticed smoother shifts on both trucks from the synthetic fluid and a much smoother TOD engagemnt after using the synthetic fluid in my Trooper.
Hope that helps.

TOD Transfer case 2.2 quarts +/-
Tranny 9.5 quarts +/-

Also Mobil 1 make a synthetic gear oil, perfect for the limited slip or regular front and rear diffs.

Hi,
One more thing, if you use Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil in your posi rear you do not have to add any additive as the synthetic fluid is viscious enough to protect the clutch plates.
Hope that helps.

How about fluid capacity for front and rear diff....might as well do the whole thing if I am going to be underneath
