a couple of weeks back my driver side halfshaft broke at the cv joint and i've been tring to fix it ever since. its a 97 grand am, manual 5 speed transmission. All of the guides ive checked say to just pry out the half shaft. But the only part that is still there is the end that sticks into the transaxle. Weve tried prying it with pry bars, and pulling it out. Is there something else holding in place besides the C ring at the end of the half shaft? or what tools should i try as well, i was looking a gear pullers but dont know if those wouold work.

welcome posthuman1018. Still stuck? try this link http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?ForwardPage=/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/09/d6/f5/0900823d8009d6f5.jsp
this has alot of stuff you may need with pics. You might hav to rig someway to hook up a puller to the shaft, because you probley wont be able to pull it out by hand(even with a big hammer).

also be carefull not to damage the seal on the transaxle.New seals, they run about $10-15 each.

thanks for the info, autozone was actually one of the first places i tried looking for help. I guess the simple question would be does it just pop out or is there something else i need to unfasten to get it out? By the way this is a nice forum ive always wanted to learn more about car repair, this is a great resource.

accually the inner cv shaft will hav to be pry'd out with a pry bar. If yours is broke there isnt anything to pull(du on me). Try hitting the other end of the pry bar to pop it out, they can be a pain in the ass, thats why I suggested to be carefull of the seal on the transaxle.
