How to check a 94?

I have the car listed in my sig, and I haven't done much to it since the last time I posted on here. I lost my internet at home and I'm on at school right now. Anyway, my car started taking down the gas like I had a monster V8 in it instead of a V6 last week. It also had horrible power and felt like it was choking to death when I pushed the pedal down. So I took it to the shop to see what was the matter with it, and they said it was the catalytic converter. So I told them to cut it off because I couldn't afford a new one. It runs better anyway now.
The problem is that I think it might have been something else that was tearing my gas milage apart. My SES light comes on from time to time, and lasts from as soon as it comes on till I turn the engine off. So I went to Advance yesterday when the light came on, and they said that they can't check it because it's OBDI, not OBDII. So, how would I check the OBDI system to see what's causing the code?

You would have to find a place with an OBDI scanner, or you could probably buy one on ebay

When I took my car to autozone they gave me a little key thing that has two prongs. You short two terminals together and then put your key in the ignition and turn it to the on position without starting the car. I think your car has odb1 with a odbII connector. So I dont know which ones you have to short. Anybody else know?

94 & 95s DO NOT flash codes. DO NOT put a jumper or paperclip in your ALDL. You need a reader for OBDI hybrids

Advance Auto could be full of shit. I asked them for the scanner for my car, I told them it's a 94, so OBDI. I know they have it since I had used it once before. The guy was persistent in telling me they don't have it. I asked for the box of cables, there were like 5 different ones. The first one I picked up said ALDL on it... that means OBDI. Long story short they are retarded.
