Sulfur smell

Ok, so when I stop and shut off my car I can sometimes smell sulfur. I have noticed it more lately especially when I get home. I thought I read like a week ago that its from a clogged cat, but I have a 2001. Could the cat really be clogged already? What else could do that? Thanks!

EDIT: Shit, this isnt the Cavalier forum! Damn am I confused (its been a long ass day). Its a 2001 Cavalier with a little over 30k miles and it smells like sulfur, but I only notice it when I stop. Any ideas?

Only weird smells I can think of are rich exhaust, the smell of the grease from the cv axle, and the smell of frying clutch.

I actually had that problem all the time... But then I cut down on the bean borritos from Taco Bell. :smokin: I bet you're running rich.

Aside from what's already been said, maybe there is oil leaking onto to the exhaust causing it to burn. The smell of burning oil is definetly not a pleasant one.

Things to try:

Switch brands of gas.

Check O2 sensor voltage at both cruise/idle and WOT

Replace cat.

The beer is crucial!

Its the catalitic converter, replace it or if you are lucky and dont have a state veh insp, like here in SC , get rid of it, most are pretty easy to remove and any exhaust shop can then weld in a piece of pipe to connect the front to the back of the exhaust system.

Actually you're lucky, i have access to TSB's from GM because of my job, i'm gonna check and see if there are any for your car concerning this.

I use BP 90% of the time, occasionally I get something else.

:lol: I'm going to need more than one! My friends car is spewing white smoke from somewhere under the hood :banghead: but thats a different thread. Nothing else really, occasionally it will bog in the low RPMs of each gear, but I just thought it wasnt warmed up good. There isnt any black exhaust, any other characteristics of running rich? The gas milage seems pretty normal. Could running rich really smell like rotten eggs? Thanks guys I appreciate it.

I was listening to Car Talk on NPR today and somebody called up today and asked this same question and they said to try changing the brand of gas like SpyderTurbo007 said, and that it is caused by the cat.
