gas gauge problem

my friend has an 00 Intrepid 2.7L auto trans . Occassionally, the gas gauge drops to completely empty, then jumps back up to the normal reading. The other day, one fo the front "map" lights just came on - on it's own - then turned right back off. Anyone ever had this kinda problem ..... suggestions on where I could start looking ?

My first guess would be a loose fuse or a pinched wire somewhere but I really have no idea where to dtart looking

a few things come to mind. First, if his fuel gauge is faulty, it could be the result of a faulty connection on the instrument cluster or fuel sending unit or even the Body Control Module is acting up. If the overhead just came on by itself, the BCM controls that, so as a way of narrowing down what the problem could be, I'd suggest getting the BCM checked out.

ok, I'm not a Dodge guy .... where is the BCM and what does it look like so I can check it out.

i had the same problem on my 99 intrepid, the fuel gauge would go all the way to empty and beep, even if the tank was full i took it to a couple of shops and they coulnt find the problem, until i decided to take care of it myself, i bought the complete fuel tank from a junk yard and replaced (remember that the fuel pump is attached to the tank itself) i found it to be fairly simple with just a floor jack and some hand tools, the problem is now gone,i dont know if you need to do the same but it worked for me.

ok, I'm not a Dodge guy .... where is the BCM and what does it look like so I can check it out.

the BCM is located inside the dash behind the radio/HVAC controls. There's really nothing you can do to fix it; if it's bad, it has to be replaced and only Chrysler dealers can reprogram the new BCM.

i work at a dodge dealership and am aware of this problem. there is a "flash" or update for the BCM that fixes this problem. it should only cost one hour labor to fix this problem. there is no need to replace the BCM or any other components.
