1998 Montero Sport smokes

My 98 montero sport has a 4cyl. 5spd, Driving the other day suddenly the check engine light went on and it started running very rough. The car smokes, It smells like raw fuel to me. The smoke does not appear to be from oil or water since it has not lost either. The motor runs but has a miss and no power eventually it will stall and is hard to restart. Any help please!!!!!
