Ford Explorer Problems

I got some quick questions for you all. I will be buying a Ford Explorer soon and I need to know what the major problem areas are. For example the Ford Taurus has a really bad automatic transmission, made of tinfoil. What is the best engine to get for the Explorer, I was thinking the 4L with automatic transmission. It will be a really old explorer I get. Around 1991. Is the 4L V6 any good. Or should I go 1995+ 5L V8 that is way out of my price range. I think by researching this vehicle most problems happen after 200k, but depends on maintenance schedule and drivers habits. There are a few of these in the junk yards, thats why I am looking at Fords over the Jeep. But last time I checked there were more Jeep Cherokees then Explorers. I dont know what to buy.
