cam position senser

I have a 1996 ford tauras 3.0 u motor. when i took the cam position senser off there was nothing but a mess under the cap discinagrated my problem is the aluminum bucket that it sits in there were metal pieces and bent out of shape. I don't know what it is suposed to look like. will I need to buy the whole shaft? and how do i take the shaft for the position senser out I'm lost please help Thanks

That piece is the syncronizer. You can do a search of the forums for a code P0340 and find info on how to install. You do need to buy a new part.

Do a search for 'Cam Sensor Taurus' on this forum. You will see a post answered by me to a post specifically titled 'Cam Sensor on 97 Taurus'. The specifics are in that response. Do not include the words 'on 97' or you will get an error message stating the words are shorter than 3 letters long.

I hope that your synchronizer vane is not too damaged or you will not be able to replace it as easily as this procedure describes. My procedure works if you can record the position of the rotating vane relative to various slots on the assembly. If it is just bent you should be able to determine and record the positions of the vane edges.

I have the very same problem did you replace the shaft and how did you do it. I am looking for detailed instructions on how to replace the shaft
