Cheap Beater? Datsun 510! Bag one for under 1 thousand and use the rest to buy your woofers and speaks.

Dodge Shadow Coupe with the spoiler. Best looking car you can get for well under $2k, easy to maintain and work on, cheap on gas and insurance. Try to get one with the 5 speeed manual.

im all for the prelude :P i own one and its the easiest car to maintain my family has every had. great milage too. You might have trouble fitting subs in the trunk though if you buy really big ones. What about an older civic hatch? you could fit a monster system in there.
